I don't think your prescription would work in the long-term, Andrew. With falling birthrates, western countries (especially Europe) will need to depend upon immigration more. If people are uneducated, then introduce them to the education system.

Thus ta-da, more educated workers. It's the same effect as if there were a babyboom, except more of them are adults.

Stop the Quantitative Easing. Stop the bailouts of inefficient companies. Stop the inflation and devaluation of our currency. Stop the government from getting in bed with companies like GE. That would solve a good portion of it.

And I'm going to go out on a limb and say that letting over 30 million immigrants into your country in just a few years, whether righty or wrongly, will increase inequality. A Guatemalan family isn't exactly going to become Middle Class. Many of them don't have any education. The sheer excess of unskilled labor that results also depresses wages, which disproportionately affects pre-existing poor communities, like the black community.

Citation from a paper of mine.
(Borjas, G. J.; Grogger, J.; Hanson, G. H. (2010). "Immigration and the Economic Status of African-American Men". Economica 77)

Or you can keep thinking it's all Walmart.
