Very cool, Nathan Anderson (comic in the picture)just did a whole week at the comedy club I work at. Very funny and has a really good energy. If you have a chance to see his set, check it out.

@whodat The GI Bill is a powerful recruitment tool. Student loans are the worst. On the other hand, they generally carry a significantly lower risk of being shot at. (I'm not being glib here. I respect the heck out of people who choose that path; it's just not for everyone.) You paid for your education, just with a different coin. Glad it worked out for you.

That's pretty much what I did in high school. Then I joined the Marines, served 8 years, got out and joined the IBEW apprenticeship program. I even got to collect my GI Bill because an apprenticeship counts the same as being enrolled in college so I got paid by the union and the gov't to learn how to become a jorneyman electrician. Now I make more money than most of the people I went to school with who all have degrees and have to work half of their lives just pay off their student loans.

Well of course you'll learn stuff in school. Then you'll forget nearly all of it once you move on. Except for the stuff that was really interesting or useful.

"No, it's true. School is a place for learning in the same sense that McDonalds is a place for eating."
I wouldn't be surprised if that was coming from an American, but from what I know canadian schools are at lest above average, which means the problem is in you. It's like you're going to an all you can eat buffet and filling up on bread.

@intrigid and co.
American High school is exactly equivalent to a McDonalds in the sense that the workers there have no other options and are forced into their positions and still manage to do a pooty job. It's a shame that social activities, dances, rallies, football games and the like have so much support. You don't need a longer lunch you whiny punk, you need to sit down and pay attention.

disclaimer- firstly I am nearly 50, secondly I did go to a public school. But , Latin has been useful, Shakespeare and Chaucer plus a classic were mandatory, If you were late to class it was detention, teachers could and did throw things at us, public humilition was common. All practices I loathe- but, not due this but due to to the high quality of the staff- we learnt. I just hope they were paid well...

I saw the entire series Roots not one, not two, but three times throughout High School and Middle School. I was made to read To Kill a Mockingbird not once, not twice, but three times in the same period. I was made to watch a slave movie called Amistad not once, but twice. I was also called a savage by one of my teachers because I am of European decent.

The schools are exceedingly dumb, my entire curriculum was built around basically Western Guilt and the perils of Imperialism and Oppression. It's all fine and dandy until the kids graduate and you realize that they don't actually know anything and they aren't capable of doing anything, just knowing that they are oppressed and are owed something. Or that they are oppressors and owe something.

If I were dictator, I would probably immediately fire 30-50% of teachers and totally change the curriculum. Even Russia has better schools than us. They learn Chemistry in Middle School.
