McGovern, (sigh), UK police have armed response units all over the country. I put in a 999 call about six months ago, within 10 minutes two officers responded, flak jackets, side arms and automatic weapons.
Airports are regularly openly patrolled by officers similarly equipped.
Re an early comment, if you think Eire citizens are scared of the IRA you really do not understand the Irish.

In the UK the only place police officers can carry a firearm is NI........

fascinating how McGovern's certainty stems from total ignorance of the subject.

Much like your knowledge of firearm laws in the US.

I'm betting I've spent more time in the States than McG has in Europe; might even be true of Davy.

During my own travels (my family originate there) round the Republic I couldn't find one Irish citizen who wanted unification with the North.

Yes and I'm sure the ones that want too talk freely about it because that wouldn't potentially compromise their saftey/freedom.

Oi, dipsh*tdavy, don't tell me about the US. Ask me about it and I'll tell you what it is like, but don't pretend to tell me about it. Otherwise it's all fair game.

How'd that work out for N. Ireland again???

Oi, dipsh*t, McGovern. Talking to you. You couldn't get guns in Northern Ireland, so back in the day all the guns were shipped in from Libya. Thankfully most of them were caught at the border, whether by boat or airplane. How much more of a clusterf*ck warzone would it have been if anyone of age and of sound mind (which let's face it, is the vast majority of the population) would have been allowed to buy guns at the local equivalent of Walmart, and swap them around like Christmas Crackers?

Making guns hard to obtain is not a bad idea.

Also, don't tell me about Northern Ireland. Ask me about it and I'll tell you what it was like, but don't pretend to tell me about it.

Oh, McGovern 1981, how little you understand.
Majority of population in NI Protestant - want to be British (hence the Partition).
Recent poll showed slightly over half the Catholics in NI wanted to remain in Britain. Even assuming over estimate by a factor of 2, still real majority of NI population want to remain part of the UK.
Referendum of Eire population in the run up to the Good Friday agreement rescinded all claims of the Republic to NI by close to 80% majority.
During my own travels (my family originate there) round the Republic I couldn't find one Irish citizen who wanted unification with the North.

Hard to say mabey it would've gotten the UK out of where they don't belong solving the problem for good.

@MacGovern: It's true, the British are polite like that, eh?

Customer: I'd like to buy a gun please.
Salesman: You must have a liscence, permit, background check, 30 day wait period...
C: Oh no! I'm a terrorist, and plan to shoot the coppers tomorrow!
S: Oh well then! 25 pounds & fifty, here you go! Cheeri-o!

iirc: The IRA used many "home built" guns too.

Fact remains: it's a "race-based gang issue". Get rid of "The War On Drugs" and 80% of it would vanish.
Same for those huge murder rates in Central and South America. Much of it is driven by "drug cartels" who are makin zillions shipping drugs to... THE USA!

And since the Democrats are sending arms to the Cartels? While imposing sanctions on certain legitimate governments? I doubt this will change any time soon...

@davymid

it wasn't written by Jesus or God or Moses

Of course not. However, it is an Amendment in the Bill of Rights. To attempt to alter it should be discussed with the same concern and distrust as any other - such as the right to free speech. If you are not willing to discuss the alteration of the First Amendment, then you should also be unwilling to alter the Second.

I would just like to please not get shot in the face

Considering that, on any day, on the average, you have a 0.0000088% chance of being murdered with a gun in the US - I think you'll be fine.

See, the argument comes down to viewpoints. In your suggestion, you mitigate statistics by sacrificing individuals. The logic is that you can limit the amount of damage an attacker can do. However, this approach does not consider the person being attacked and whether or not it is fair to disarm them.

If you don't have a gun, and I don't have a gun, then it's hard for either one of us to shoot me in the face. That makes me happy.

BUT... If I don't have a gun, and you don't have a gun, Tyrone (or Chaz if you think that's racist) from across the tracks has one. He also has a rap sheet a mile long and has no regard for the law. He's gonna shoot us both in the face, because he knows we won't and can't do anything about it.

Liberalism: The idea that allowing two people of the same sex to get married is somehow more important to our existence than the Second Amendment.

See, this is where it get's funky. With the ultimate respect I can possibly offer, I'm not American. I don't give a f*ck about your Second Amendment, it wasn't written by Jesus or God or Moses. It's not sacrosanct. I'm a world citizen who travels to the US a lot. I would just like to please not get shot in the face if at all possible. If you don't have a gun, and I don't have a gun, then it's hard for either one of us to shoot me in the face. That makes me happy.

Again both extremes are idiots. Here is a town where the mayor set a law three years ago that requires the head of every household to own some kind of weapon (Criminals and the mentally ill are exempt). Why the need for the law? "There's a big push out there to take away our right to keep and bear arms." So the Mayor's whole argument is based on fear and lies. Sounds about right in line with the arguments on both sides.

Let's reduce the number of guns.

A FINE idea @davymid! First lets remove the "already illegal" guns. Then take the guns away from criminals, who already illegally own them.

AFTER you get the guns which are CURRENTLY illegal? THEN you can think about taking them away from law-abiding citizens.

No need to pass "new laws" at all: just enforce the ones which currenly exist...

Passing "laws" which do absolutely nothing? Isn't an intelligent option...

@davymid

Let's reduce the number of guns.
This is a red herring, though. Across the other 23 first world nations (excluding the US as an outlier), there is actually an obvious inverse trend between guns per capita and homicides per capita.

Stated plainly, on the average, first world countries with more guns per capita enjoy less homicides per capita.

So what's my point then? It's that gun ownership rates are not the cause of the problems. Most likely, there is another factor at work in the US that needs to be examined. In my opinion, it's culture.

This is what the "gun control" movement is all about: Grabbing Your Guns!
They don't want YOU to have that right any longer, so they'll pass enough laws to (eventually) take ALL your guns away! Just like Australia.
Of course criminals will still have guns, as will the Police...

Don't listen to the lies: It's not about "safety" it's not about "the children" it's ALL about taking legal guns OUT of the hands of legal owners.

Oh, and spending 100s of BILLIONS of "taxpayer dollars" doing exactly nothing. That too.
