you'll find lots of larger scale versions of this along telephone and catv lines on utility poles. More than once a tree had to be cut down or pruned severely because it grew around the cabling.

They look a lot like ghost gums or grey gums, due to the lack of bark. which might suggest that it was taken here in Australia, but there's not a lot other evidence to support my theory.

Only a year or two depending on the species of the tree.
