They don't need to ban cell phones at gas stations; they need to ban ungrounded, loosely crumpled, gasoline-soaked aluminum foil at gas stations. |

This is either an outright fake, OR the radio waves from the phone heat the foil which causes the gasoline vapors to ignite.
The SOURCE of the "cellphone myth" was a firefighter's casual comment in British Columbia, Canada. When asked why a gas station had burned, he said in part of his answer "a spark from a cellphone" might have caused it (amoung other things). Nevermind that this has never happened! People still believe it! |

Hmmmmm ... so under ideal conditions (scrunched foil has lots of short edges, makes a good aerial for UHF us used by mobile phones; short gaps, to allow tiny sparks to jump; a high concentration of petrol fumes, indoors with no ventilation) the phone has to be held a couple of centimetres from the foil and then there is a small chance of a spark during a call. Noting that the inverse square law applies, so ten times the distance would only give 1% of the power you have to realise that this does not mean that a mobile phone is actually hazardous in a petrol station, unless you are very careful to try and create a hazard! |
