For all those criticizing this video, I'll usually drop a ball of tinfoil in a puddle of gasoline and then lie down next to it and make a call while my gas is pumping. I thought everyone did. I, for one, am glad I got to see it before blowing myself up!

Just kidding, we aren't allowed to pump our own gas in Oregon.

It's not the phone that caused that, it's the foil. By holding the phone up close, the foil is attenuating some of the signal the phone is sending/receiving. These signals generate a small amount of voltage in the ball and if you have two contact points the right distance apart and are different voltages you get a spark.

I work at a gas station, lots of people use their phones at the pump and the place hasn't blown up yet.

I almost had a heart attack when this young guy came in, paid for gas then stepped outside and lit up a cigarette before going to his pump. I stopped his pump and got on the intercom and said "Will the idiot on pump 3 kindly come to the front of the store and put his cigarette out before he blows up half the city."

Scared the daylights out of me.

I know you guys say the myth has been busted,

The foil ball spontaneously combusted out of sheer boredom.

Keep foil balls, frying pans and card strips out of your gas tank and you should be perfectly fine.

This is bollocks! It's all about static electricity which can and will be extremely varied by the humidity on any particular given day. AND whether or not that particular pump has or does not have a vapor recovery system. None the less, the odds of a cellular phone being the cause of a fire when you're filling up is pretty much nil.

"This is why I only fill up at petrol stations that don't have frying pans with petrol soaked tin foil in them." Classic comment...!

Totally disproved about ten years ago, moron who re-posted this. Get a job!

razbitom. Please fit a flag with your name on it to your car aerial when you visit the petrol station. That way, the sensible people of society will have the chance to finish filling and leave before you get there.
(Yes, I do know what I am talking about, I am a radio engineer by profession).

the idiot legend about using cell phones whilst refuelling is really annoying.
using a modern cell phone will have no effect whatsoever... the rule stems from the days of carphones and CB radios... anything grounded to the car body. if you used those whilst refuelling there *was* a chance that it could arc to the pump handle (the nozzle is non-reactive) and ignite the ambient fumes.

so... YES is was once true, NO it is not, any longer, an issue.

unless it's actually hooked up to your car.

This is why I only fill up at petrol stations that don't have frying pans with petrol soaked tin foil in them.

This may take a lot of calls, and a match, and more petrol, and then it still might not work.

I'm scared now because I stand around at the station with a roll of foil covered in gas and make 10 or 20 phone calls at a time. I might be able to roast marshmallows.

Let me get this straight,
cell phones won't start fires, don't pop popcorn and don't cause brain tumors.

What good are they?!
