She's living proof that what they believe is a lie.

"well regulated militia" means "random woman with gun in her purse" now. the founding fathers are rolling in their graves.

Patchgrabber: "only 23%"? That's almost 1 in 4. That is a significant number. That's a compelling number in favor of their self defense, not against it. I think would be attacker would think long and hard that the woman he's considering has a 23% chance of being armed, not 0.2%.

@McGovern: "Forgotten Battle" indeed, I had never heard of it. While it's not exactly mainland US, I'll still give that one to you. However, they didn't run into civilian opposition, just military, so it doesn't really support @insane_ai's statement.

That didn't stop Japan from thinking about doing it during WW2. It was that other thing.

Well they didn't attempt a land invasion so Pearl doesn't really apply. Plus I doubt it was the average civilian with a gun that prevented them from doing it. Besides, it didn't stop the ruskies in Red Dawn.

I think being on a continent separate from most of the populated world had a little to do with it.

Have you even considered that having an armed citizenry is why we have not been invaded by ground troops in 200 years?

Are you anti-gun people listening yet?

Have you thought about your duty as part of the inactive militia to protect our nation?

...and after that compelling story to which I'm sure she learned a life-long lesson, was she able to carry her protection into the building where her story was told?

The root of this problem is, we've gone from stupid to lunacy - not a good direction. For the greater good, I think it would be best if the press didn't idolize those that induce terror. No pictures of the accused or detailed accounts of their life.

As for stats, 78% of them are made up on the spot anyway.

Anti gunners when presented with a strong arguments consider it opinion unlike the opinions they present as fact.

Meh, only about 23% of US women own guns. Most women don't like guns and don't use them as it stands right now, so an argument of self-defense for women isn't very compelling.

chalket: I see that you completely missed the point, that crime statistics have gone down except in 'gun free zones'. Gun free zones are killing zones for criminals. If you can't accept those statistics as proof, then you're just a stubborn ideologue.

I like how theatrical she is, and the fact that a huge portion of her story is unverifiable outside of the shooting itself.

I would also like to point out that in a crisis even, even highly trained soldiers lose the ability to determine lapsed time. How can she be so sure about the 45 seconds that passed. It could have just as easily been 15 seconds and just felt much longer. Was she boiling magic grits on her physics-defying stove? (My Cousin Vinnie)

I think it's interesting that the people who get to decide matters like this have very, very limited practical experience with the things that they make laws about. They rely almost entirely on what information is fed to them and their own personal goals or moral compass.

casidhe - Given the fact that this country has an INSANE amount of firearms already, which the government has little or no way of tracking...can you supply a method of controlling who has them? Any idea that will stop a criminal from breaking the law? All proposed actions will only affect the law abiding by striping their rights to protect themselves. Or is it more likely that you are living in an emotionally fueled daydream where the government will protect you, so you won't have to take any responsibility for your own safety? Striping our rights will never create paradise. Simply saying we need less guns is a lazy when you have no real solution.
