As an independent contractor I'm not a huge fan of unions. However, the basic concept of unionism (protection of worker rights) will probably become important again as the middle class continues to be minimized by big business. The concept of "one world, one worker" has been replaced by "one world, one big corporation" and that is a dangerous place to be, especially as deregulation of goods and services continues to erode market safety. |

lol, it's hilarious because it tries to say capitalism is the solution and other ways will create bad things like no unions and farmers who can't plant their own seeds. OH WAIT, that's exactly what we have now thanks to corporate take over. |

Unions were originally formed for these reasons, but once organized crime got involved in management, (Yea, don't act like you didn't know..) they turned into profit grinders that only REALLY look out for their member's jobs to keep those dues rolling in. |

People say "socialist" like it's a bad thing.
Sometimes it is. Sometimes Capitalism isn't good either. But "Socialism" is a political thing and "Capitalism" is an economic thing. The two can exist together quite nicely. They have co-existed in the United States quite well from 1935 thru 1990. |

@Kain1, modern day unions are pretty bad.
The point of a union was to find work for its members, and to ensure that its members weren't mistreated.
Nowadays, unions just grab the money of its members and do little to help find a job, and working conditions have improved greatly since this cartoon, so the union is pointless at that as well.
There are some good unions left; I am part of a musicians union and they are always finding me some sort of gig to play, at least one gig a month. It's a hobby and not a career, but it brings in a bit of extra cash and is fun to do. |

I think we can all agree that communism is bad.. It's hardly insightful..
Curious though.. The bit about Unions.. 07:36.. I thought they were anti-freedom..? At least according to what i heard from the conservative side.. Yet this cartoon considers them an important part of free society.. hmmmm.. |

McGovern: Yes, it does seem like a cartoon from the 1930's. And yes, it is oft repeated, but this one should be repeated often.
Until people get it, that socialism and communism isn't the answer, but another form of nobility and slavery, then reminders like these should be shown regularly. |

Not all of the changes were so bad. For example when this was made schools and hospitals, everything were segregated. Women couldn't borrow money from a bank with out their husband's or father's permission and I was illegal in 50...er 48 states because I was born gay. So.... take the good with the bad.
Yeah it's great and all, but this video and the Charlie Chaplin speech are tied for the Most Often Re-posted Video award. |
