Wednesday, February 27, 2013 2:44:11 PM As a fully employed special education teacher, I earn about enough after rent bills and travel to spend £300 on food for my family of 3 per month, that's £10 between us for a day, or a bit less than £4 each, I need these foodstamps. |

Wednesday, February 27, 2013 1:44:33 PM jjohns04: In some cases you are correct about your assertion, that people that can work are freeloading. Others that've worked hard their entire lives have had to fight hard to get the disability they deserve. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it. Then again, whoever said the government was reasonable? |

Wednesday, February 27, 2013 12:25:47 PM My best friend's family has also abused the whole foodstamp / disability thing , friend stayed up 5 days straight and was found on the side of the highway babbling weird poo ... was on disability for 5 years . I had a long talk with him and helped persuade him to get a job as a dishwasher at a local restaurant... he's living a much better life now and understanding first hand how there's alot of undeserving people out there getting free handouts , and it's our tax dollars going down the tube. They need to instill limits on these programs and do some investigating into the actual backgrounds of people before giving them money for nothing. My cousin lives in Maine and is a bum like my gf's bro . He's 30 , been going to college for 10 + years and hsi parents are paying for everything. If you give someone something for nothing , it doesn't give them the motivation to better themselves or move forward( most the time with people who abuse the system ) . |

Wednesday, February 27, 2013 12:20:12 PM I've seen alot of this first hand ... girlfriend's sister is mentally handicapped and basically is a 20 year old functioning as a 12 year old. She has a job at Olive garden and makes breadsticks . She needs disability in order to be able to take care of basic expenses. It has been hell for her to get on it . On the other hand , my gf's brother is a 30 year old bum who used to be a crackhead , stole from his family to support his habit , and is married to a woman who claims to have every illness in the book , uses heavy drugs , and hasn't ever worked due to laziness ... just so she can get Disability / foodstamps / wick for her kid. Both of them easily got foodstamps and disability.. when they have nothing wrong with them ( can prove this ) . And somehow they just recently bought a house . I believe alot of these free handouts are simply created to gain votes by political parties.

Wednesday, February 27, 2013 6:27:26 AM CoyoteKing: "pretty sure the food stamps are to supplement your food budget, not pay for the whole thing." Thus the first word in SNAP, supplemental. I get SNAP as well, but it only covers about half my food budget. So I live on about $8 a day for food, which if budgeted well is enough to live on. Health food and organics are too damn expensive to be practical in a budget that low. |

Tuesday, February 26, 2013 11:18:07 PM "Stay with me here fella" The tribal compacs are not the same as welfare babies. They are, in a legal sense, very differant from an ordinary hand-out. Differant rules apply so why mix them together? |

Tuesday, February 26, 2013 11:15:03 PM Are not food stamps meant to help, but not be the sole source of income for food? I thought it was a way to make sure they actually buy food. We don't have that in Canada, your expected to buy food or starve when your on welfare. |

Tuesday, February 26, 2013 9:53:58 PM Except for the bananas, she basically wasted her money on prepared crap. You can eat pretty well on $4 a day, but you actually have to cook the food. |

@ PoptartinSD - I think we're get off track with Tribal Affairs. It's kind of a differant story. But yes, I see what you're saying about gov'ment assistance abuse. Hey! I bet that's an addiction. Gov'ment Assistance Addiction. I could qualify for Disability checks if I had that! |

Tuesday, February 26, 2013 5:43:46 PM @ PoptartinSD I know exactly what you mean. Free food, free money, tax refunds in the thousands. Which I never understood cause they don't pay taxes. After ringing up their $500 in junk food (one time it was a thousand in pure junk food), they have drive up and you load into a car nicer than your own because they don't have to pay for it. |

Tuesday, February 26, 2013 5:40:42 PM Oh EBT, how you can be a blessing and a nightmare. Blessing for those who truly need it and actively work or are looking for a job. A nightmare for those who don't work, never intend to, and to those who have to provide service for the people who receive it. I used to work at a supermarket for 3 years before finding better employment. To this day I still hate the first of the month (when EBT comes in) I have seen many people who do need it and benefit from it, and many more who are just lazy (I grew up near a reservation). Those who abuse it generally get more junk food, less veggies and fruit and are fat as hell. And with those savings they made our liquor store one of the most profitable in the area. I have seen rampant abuse, and at this point I think that while it is a great program it is in need of some serious overhauling. Cause when many of them come from generations of couch potatoes it benefits no one. |

Tuesday, February 26, 2013 5:32:29 PM Gerry 1of1 you can go to the library or to job service to use the computer. Job service will also print you free resume's.... As many as you want. I've had to use food stamps for 3 months when I moved from one town to another and looking for a job. Thank goodness the assistance was there when I needed it!!! But unfortunately the state I live in is full of a lot of self-entitled Native Americans who say we stole their land and for this the Government hands them food stamps, free college educations, free housing, free money every month for being a tribal member, free health care, etc. Just for being Indian. They sell their food stamps for half of what they are worth and buy booze. You see them passed out all over the place wearing their "Native Pride" T-shirts and hats. A very proud people indeed lol |

Tuesday, February 26, 2013 4:42:57 PM "How come "poor" people in America are always over weight? Go over to Africa and see what it's really like to be poor" Because the food that is generally available to them is extremely unhealthy and overloaded with preservatives and salt to substitute for more expensive flavorings. |
