This man really has no case. It doesn't matter what the Church considers to be a person if the law doesn't see it that way. You cannot sue for three deaths when the law says that there is only one person. The church medical group isn't trying to f this guy over and it is not contradictory to the the Church's teachings.
There is another example of something similar. During George W Bush's office, the unborn victims of violent act was passed which considered fetuses as people if they were wrongfully killed (excluding abortions). Many Catholics had a problem with this because it is stupid to legally consider them human in certain instances then allow abortions in others.
In this video, it seems that the man was just trying to sue for three times more than what the law allowed. If there was wrongdoing such as neglect or malpractice, the man needs to get money from a lawsuit. He doesn't deserve to get money because the laws defining a human are different from the Church's teachings

I don't think it matters what anyone else thinks, if you already loved those babies then obviously they were people to you. As far as the hospital goes I think two things 1) that they should be held responsible for anything they did wrong, or for any neglect and 2) that a religion like catholicism has no place in health care, it's always going to be fraught with contradiction.

Are you kidding? It's the Catholic Church.
They can afford the best.
They have jewish lawyers!

LOL, Gerry! You're probably right.

the main issue here is he sued for "wrongful death" of 3 people, they said only the wife was a "person", based on the fact that the hospital counter sued I assume he lost the case of "wrongful death" for the wife. now regardless of if you count the child bearing mother as 1 person or 3, he still lost the case for the host body. so he will NOT be winning a case for "wrongful death" on the 2 children, regardless if they are counted as "people" or not. sucks to be him, but you cant sue the hospital for not being able to save someone (or 3) just because you are upset you lost someone, thus the counter sue

@darkmagic14n - The contradiction lies in the fact that the representatives of the Catholic Church are using the legal definition of "personhood" to f*ck the guy over. Just like everyone else who believes in religion, they choose to use certain aspects of their own religion and disregard others when it's convenient for them. That's why this is bullsh*t, and all religion is bullsh*t. If you believe all this nonsense is the "word of God" and that "God is infallible" then you should live your life according to that. It's either all, or none, no cherry-picking.

life =/= personhood
life =/= birth

they weren't born, thus they don't qualify to be a human. There is nothing that says that, had the mother survived, the twins would've been born just fine months later.

there is no contradiction, just people who want to SEE contradiction.

again, I'll use the butterfly analogy. a caterpillar creates a chrysalis, do you then call it a butterfly? no, its not until it emerges that you can say the caterpillar turned into a butterfly. if it died in the chrysalis, you would say the caterpillar died, not the butterfly died.

I'm not saying the hospital was in the right, but by law they are in the clear, there were 3 lives lost, but only 1 person died.

I have no sympathy for this guy. First, "the Catholic teachings" does not mean "the law." Hospitals don't have clerical teams in case they're sued, the have legal teams. Screw what they preach, brush up on your law. And when you lose, yes you have to pay for their legal team - it keeps frivolous lawsuits from being filed every second.
Second, if you're suing over wrongful death, best look at the makers of your refrigerator, stove and microwave before visiting the hospital to get your cholesterol checked again.

It sucks when people die, but you can hardly call it the hospital's fault when a severely overweight / obese chick pregnant with twins has an embolism.

Although I sympathize for the loss of his wife and twins, he really only got into financial trouble when he sued the hospital, and they never really said whether there was actually any wrongdoing on part of the hospital, but if they countersued and won, it would stand to reason that his claim was refuted in court. Thus, I feel no sympathy for his current financial position, and such is the outcome in a sue-happy country.

@darkmagic14n - How can you NOT see the contradiction there?

According to the Catholic Church, LIFE begins at conception, the instant an egg is fertilized. That's why they're against abortion because you're ending a LIFE. The mother dies while pregnant with twins, they die along with the mother, therefore three LIVES have been lost, not one.

So the kids weren't born yet and the church says that means they're not "people." Meanwhile, they also teach that "life begins at conception."

I'm not seeing the contradiction...you're saying that all life is automatically human (aka people) life? would you call a butterfly a caterpillar?

2 babies were stillborns, they didn't receive birth certificates because they weren't born. end of story, no contradictions.
