If he refuses to license it, than he has no right to complain when people bootleg it.

I agree with his statement about quick cash but not all merch is bad especially if the artist is the one creating them like Voltaire. |

I've known about this for a while, and it still seems odd. Like, I can understand the argument for artistic integrity, but...if he had exercised control over WHAT C&H merchandise was licensed, he could have kept his integrity AND made money. Watterson stopped making new C&H comics 17 years ago...wonder what he's been doing to support himself? |

There is a seller on ebay (dericsmom) who has been selling (presumably) bootleg "art prints" of Watterson's for years now...

Thats cool, thats his perogative, but I dont see what difference it makes to anyone but him anyways. Its not like he fought against the comemrcialization of a public resource to prevent suffering. Hes just an eccentric who can afford to be difficult. Good for him, Meaningless for us. Love the comic strip though, and am happy to keep enjoying them either way... |

Sure he does. It's still his intellectual property. He has the right to expect people to follow established copyright law, regardless of those peoples' sentiment toward the property in question. |

AS much as I love Calvin & Hobbes, and think Bill Watterson is completely insane, I stand behind him in his fight for his rights!
Charles Schultz demanded that EVERY single "Peanuts" spin off product be shown to him for his approval. He only "vetoed" a handful over the years, but everyone agrees the makers knew he was watching and made better products because of that.
E.C. Segar Created "Popeye" and got money from a spinach company to put him on the label.
After the first 2 year term was up, Segal REFUSED to renew the contract (even though it was a big % of his income!) because he said the spinich was poor quality. The company BEGGED him to reconsider and VOWED to put #1 spinach in. He did, they did. Popeye Spinach was the top quality in canned spinach for decades. |

I spent a few seconds thinking, "You know, I didn't realize it but there is no C&H merchandise out there". Then I realized I had already spent most of my life not giving a shiat anyways. And I have a couple of C&H collection books. So, meh! |

If he refuses to license it, than he has no right to complain when people bootleg it. People want to own merchandise related to something they love. I would kill for a cute Calvin and Hobbs shirt, and wearing one would make anyone respect the comic less.

Not licensed by the artist, and he see's no money from it.
I loved (still love) Calvin & Hobbes. Great strip.
I hated when he quit syndicating them, but I appreciated his reasoning not to run a good strip into the ground.
