As loathe as I am to contemplate these images a second time, here goes:
The photos were probably taken with a cell phone camera, with limited resolution. Since the resolution was too low to blow up the medium shot without a lot of pixelation visible, the photographer used another shot (where he had evidently walked up closer to the subject) for the close-up.
I have no doubt that the images are real. Unfortunately.
