Saturday, February 23, 2013 5:03:17 PM Little side note here. Modern carrots are orange because dutch farmers bred a special strain for the Duke of Orange. ( I think he was duke, but royalty to be sure.) Traditional carrots were purple. |

Saturday, February 23, 2013 3:12:06 PM Gerry- research 'genetically modified'- it's a b it different than grafting and whatever. Whodat- ya turn off your cable, internet and cellphones.if you have multiple cars- sell all but one. Burn your credit cards. eat meals at home and learn to eat cheaply. If you have to, walk away from the house and eat the loss. All the things complacent, spoiled, entitled Americans won't do because they won't give up their creature comforts. |

Saturday, February 23, 2013 12:52:32 PM @CaptKangaroo - "then you downsize to live within your means" Easier said than done. Two people I know have had their houses on the market for over 3 years. Both have their homes listed at a price that would just about allow them to break even, maybe take a small loss. Their intention is to sell and "downsize" as you said, but that can't be achieved until the house is sold. |

CaptK , no I'm not. I don't have a problem with genetically modified food. The stuff you think is natural isn't. It's just been around so long it seems "normal" to you. Cows did not start out looking like that. Tomatoes are not as the were a hundred years ago. And none of it turned into poison just because they are modified. If it were not for genetically modified grains we would be unable to feed the current population. |

@ CaptK - Lab modified food is not differant than slow-bred modified food. A carrot is a carrot. The only differance is how quickly it is accomplished. |

Friday, February 22, 2013 6:05:31 PM @CrakrJak- Well, as long as they're using these toxic substances sparingly, okay then. Eco-nuts aside(There's a joke in there, somewhere), I don't care who you know, or what they're doing; I was speaking of the 'norm'- but you knew that. That norm is 80% of antibiotic use in total, is added to animal feed- we ain't talkin cats and dogs.Look up methemoglobinemia, E coli, Fecal Coliform and Cryptosporidium- reference this one with Milwaukee, Ill. around 1993. I guess I mis-spoke, I should have said farm subsidies. In Kansas from 1995 to 2011 for instance, while 32% of farms did NOT collect any subsidies, 10% did, accounting for 70% of ALL subsidies, amounting to $8.67 billion over that time span. I wish I could get folks to pay me to make what I'll later sell them- quite a racket. These are all facts taken from government sites, not eco-nut sites. Remove the wool or your rose colored glasses, or whatever. |

Friday, February 22, 2013 5:39:37 PM @Whodat- then you downsize to live within your means rather than take a handout- it's called dignity. @Gerry- that's a true but inaccurate analogy. The modified foods folks have are concerned about were tinkered with in a lab, not through breeding- cultigen vs bio-engineered. |

"In that case, Gerry, you must be Mexican according to this video." My mother immigrated to this country the old fashioned way. She got knocked up by a US Serviceman. Marriage followed & a baby 6 months later. Everyone knows a new bride can do in 6 months what it takes other women 9 months to do.

Friday, February 22, 2013 12:41:35 PM "we've got people continuing to collect unemployment benefits rather than take menial jobs" There's actually a damn good reason some people do that. I know a few people who, if they were to take a menial/minimum wage job, would actually be spending more money than they'd make. When you take into consideration car/insurance payments, gas money, public transportation costs, childcare, etc it's not worth it. What's the point in going to work if it costs you money? Even when unemployment runs out they're still better off sitting at home doing nothing and filling out their social services/welfare paperwork. With the current Federal Minimum Wage you're still well below the poverty line. |

You guys say "Genetically Modified" as if it were a bad thing. Everything you eat is genetically modified. You know, carrots aren't naturally orange, right? Damn! What's the world coming to when you can't trust a salad! |

"we've got people continuing to collect unemployment benefits rather than take menial jobs" Or people who can't get hired for them 'cause employers know if you hire overqualified people they won't stay. They leave as soon as something better comes along.

Friday, February 22, 2013 9:42:54 AM Gerry10f1 "Corn surplus? Every bit of corn is used. In corn sugar, cereals, feed, CORN BREAD yummy, and ethenol." There is a REASON we put corn in everything, even when it is NOT the best choice. That reason is because of farm subsidies and the lobbying of the agricultural companies. Corn syrup is not a good choice as a sweetener and sugar cane ethanol is seven times more energy efficient then corn ethanol. The reason everyone uses corn syrup is because it is SO cheap. The reason it is SO cheap is because of subsidies. |

Friday, February 22, 2013 9:39:25 AM CaptKangaroo: I don't know where you're getting your BS rhetoric from, but I can guess it's from eco-nuts that would rather people starve to death to reduce the surplus population (just so long as they aren't the one's starving). The farmers I know, out here in the Midwest, use anti-biotics sparingly, don't use hormones, don't over spray their fields and care about the environment we all live in. The 'corn subsidies' you are talking about are for ethanol production that the government forces producers to make and add to the gasoline they sell. Cattle out here aren't fed grain, they graze, on grass (hay and alfalfa in the winter). Hogs are fed vegetable, not grain, based feeds so that they remain lean. Chickens are fed grain, but that's natural for them to eat. One example: Prairie Farms, the largest farmer owned milk producer here, does not allow rGBH milk in their dairies. They also routinely check the levels of their milk supply for anti-biotics |

Friday, February 22, 2013 9:16:49 AM Gerry- we've got people continuing to collect unemployment benefits rather than take menial jobs because they don't want to be part of a whole new employment category- underemployed. Being a small farmer- or a corporate agricultural business, is very different than being a farm worker- can you appreciate those distinctions? While every PART of corn is used, it is not uncommon for yields to rot. Corn subsidies are a freaking joke. The mainstream agricultural and beef industries produce unsafe, unhealthy foods, flood water sources with wastes, pesticides, produce genetically altered crops that blow on nearby farms- then sue those farmers when the seeds grow, introduce hormones and antibiotics into cattle and promote animal abuse. The people who eat this garbage food- and know it- don't seem to value truth as much as convenience. |

"Truthful" .... you need to look up that word 'cause half of that was made up. Americans unwilling to do farm labor? Tell my cousin Dougie, he grows pinto beans in Dove Creek, and my first job was picking stawberry's. It's a common thing for high school kids to pick crops for summer cash. Corn surplus? Every bit of corn is used. In corn sugar, cereals, feed, CORN BREAD yummy, and ethenol. Tree hugging hippies value Mother Earth, they just don't value the truth. |
