Monday, February 25, 2013 8:09:34 AM Profound consequences, huh? Like how porn gives me AIDS, that new strain of untreatable/incurable gonorrhea, an unwanted pregnancy, a one night stand with a serial killer, and a relationship I don't want to be in? Wow, I guess I better quit the porn and go do it with the next johnson that happens my way - the more you know. |

Thursday, February 21, 2013 5:30:39 PM "its not like anyone is forcing them to become porn stars in the first place" He also talked about how girls got into porn and so often they were sexually abused as kids (often by family members) and they sort of become de-sensitized to sex and a whole other heap of negative mental and environmental issues lead to porn. I wish I could find the lecture again to link here. |

Thursday, February 21, 2013 11:59:04 AM I am going to tell you right now, as a kid, I watched a lot of porn. I am married now, and still enjoy porn about once a week. I do not need more porn now than I did then and I do not need more stimulation because of watching porn. I do just fine. |

Thursday, February 21, 2013 10:21:24 AM @Gerry: What they aren't taking into account is the levels of gender hormones in a person, and the effect those have on behaviour. When I picture a porn addict, I think of them watching it not just to rub one out, but kind of like how I'll watch Seinfeld if nothing else is on. |

I think they're confusing compulsive behavior with addiction. They're very different things, and treated differently. |

Thursday, February 21, 2013 8:26:29 AM Orgasm -> more Dopamine -> I'm a dope? -> use it or lose it -> okay, I need to do it more -> but then I'll be more of a dope? Vicious cycle. Typical. |

Thursday, February 21, 2013 7:42:11 AM So here's a question: does increased porn viewing equal lower birthrates, higher birthrates, or no change? That would be an interesting study. It could be like society's subconscious control on overpopulation. |

Thursday, February 21, 2013 6:55:46 AM I heard someone give a lecture on this and he basically said the same stuff about the science behind it, but what this video doesn't go into is the social consequences of it. In the last few decades we've seen what could be considered a huge social experiment. Porn was not easily accessed, and then all of a sudden, PORN EVERYWHERE! The guy giving the lecture drew connections between increasing dissatisfaction with relationships, 'shallowness' (from WOMEN just as much as men), increasing divorce rates etc. and the rise of porn. He also went into the porn industry and how female pornstars are basically just straight up abused and manipulated and how by watching porn you are funding this. Basically, even though many of you reacted negatively towards this video, porn = REALLY BAD FOR US and I'm sure psychologists would interpret the negative reaction as a sign of addiction. |

Thursday, February 21, 2013 5:46:34 AM I'm asking this as someone who's never done drugs, but isn't that the same for, say...a heroin addict? They get temporary relief and don't feel the urge again? Well, I've never done heroine but I think it would depend on the drug. Many a time when I've started to sober up after some weed I'll have more. Basically some people have a problem and are horribly addicted, and others just like to party, and can quit whenever they want, like me! An addiction is a behavior pattern in which a person seeks a certain stimulus repeatedly over time, which they cannot stop EVEN IN THE FACE OF NEGATIVE CONSEQUENCES. Um...no. Neurochemistry is the force behind addiction. I'm saying it. Because it's true. I don't need to suffer horribly negative consequences to be addicted to cigarettes. |

Wednesday, February 20, 2013 10:51:21 PM "Or anyone who is overweight is 'addicted' to McDonalds. They keep eating it inspite of the negative consequences." With fast food a lot of the problem is the massive amounts of MSG they add. It's in almost all our processed food and can be really addictive. Who knows what that crap is doing to our bodies. So yes people really are addicted to McDonald's because of the MSG they put in their food. |

Wednesday, February 20, 2013 9:37:06 PM Ask Dan Savage about this, guys. I'd bet money he'd tell you that once you become inured to pornography, and it has to get kinkier or more violent to satisfy your needs, normal sexual activity no longer measures up. That's a disorder, however you measure it. |

Wednesday, February 20, 2013 6:40:41 PM "... satisfy a basic human urge...". I guess I was born "addicted", so what does that say about the "porn addiction theory"? I call bullpoo. |

Wednesday, February 20, 2013 6:38:22 PM "We used to call it a lack of character, now it's a disease. And people wonder what's happened to society... there's your sign." I think it's more of a medical condition than a disease. It's pretty much on the same level as obesity, anorexia, depression, etc. Either way your comment doesn't make much sense. |

Wednesday, February 20, 2013 5:37:40 PM @canos: Well, yeah, but there's a big difference between "psychological" and "physical" addiction. Perhaps not for the addict, but otherwise. @madest: I thought you believed in Darwin's Theory |

Wednesday, February 20, 2013 4:41:16 PM Didn't bother watching the video, but being addicted to porn would follow the principle as being addicted to gambling. You can be psychologically addicted to anything really, so I'm sure there are people addicted to porn. |

Wednesday, February 20, 2013 4:36:46 PM I don't have to comment on this forum to live. That doesn't mean I'm addicted. @Cajun: Yeah, I'm not addicted either! It's just that when I try to quit IAB, I get the shakes, and the sweats, and then the reptile people start crawling out from under the carpets... ... normally I don't mind them, but they eat up all my nacho chips! @Gerry1: "liberal cause of the day" eh? Backwards messages. Satanic Cults! >Funny how the liberals were all over that one, but churches (like the Catholics) weren't. Repressed memories. Multiple-personality Disorder... Sex Addiction |
