@patchouly

I had to lie about believing in God when I was a kid just to avoid the ridicule that came with being an Atheist. I hope things have changed, but when I was a kid in school, if you were a non-believer you were shunned. And with good reason, too. If the kids are told by their parents that non-believers worship the devil and are going to hell of course that's what they're going to believe. It wasn't until high school that I realized I didn't give a poo what people thought.

I don't think you religious guys have a right to tell us we can't be upset. Pointing out how crappy it was is only pointing out one facet of the problem. If you want to ignore how crappy religion has been in the past and focus on how it is now, we can always look at the child rape cases.

But, how about we make it more personal. How about we look at how an atheist can be denied a job because no religious folks would want one around them. How about how an Atheist will be picked on, relentlessly, at school by his/her peers for not believing in the magical floating sky wizard that they were brainwashed into believing in?

Religious people are asshats that treat Atheists like crap. Not to mention the fact that there is nothing more frustrating than someone who insists something is real, when there is proof that it isn't. We have science behind us to show that the words of the Bible are wrong. If the words of the Bible are wrong, than what are you basing your faith on

Believers are always quick to say "you believe what you want I'll believe what I want" thing. But it's funny, I've never had atheists come up to my door and shove their beliefs down my throat. Or random people that I don't even know take a half hour of my time belittling me and basically calling me stupid because I don't believe in God. Just last week I was loading my truck up for a dump run and a guy walks by, introduces himself and invites me to his church. All I say is no thank you, then I couldn't get rid of the guy. I have NEVER done anything like that. If somebody asks me what I believe and why, I'm more than happy to explain. But I never try and convince anyone that my beliefs are a better option than theirs.

Okay- lets reapaet more simply. Religion is man-made. Men do horrid things to each other- what 'cause 'they use is irrelevant. If God existed then this argument might hold water- but there is NO SUCH THING AS GOD- so it doesn't- all evil is done by men, to men- for men....

Once again, the anti-Christian movement showing what stellar, super-tolerant people they are. Because as we all know, every living Christian in 2013 thinks the Crusades were a great thing and want to do them all over again.

"I'm not even Christian, nor would I ever call myself Christian. But you guys are deranged about religion. Just like the Evangelicals. Strange bed fellows you guys would be."

Truer words could not be said. Take a good hard look at the comparison between Christianity and Nazism and think about it. Talk about mindless anti-faith ideology.

Magickrat - opposing someone's religious beliefs is something entirely different than running someone else's religious beliefs down constantly.

Believe whatever you wish to believe. It isn't my concern to run that down. It just simply isn't healthy. It is also a complete and utter waste of time, and is greatly annoying.

No need to draw out my point, Listypoos. If the internet is to be believed, the argument is already over once comparisons to the Nazis are drawn.

"Simplistic, hateful, self-righteous bullcrap will only appeal to people so long before it gets tiresome."

Well that approach has got Christianity 2000yrs and counting so far.

Things like this is why the "new atheism" will ultimately fail. Simplistic, hateful, self-righteous bullcrap will only appeal to people so long before it gets tiresome.

But really, do we have to say Jesus = Hitler now?

Shall I re-post all the horrific genocide and ethnic cleansing of atheist driven regimes?
Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, etc..

Once again the point flies over everyone's head. What it shows is man's inhumanity to man. No, Jesus isn't the same as Hitler but Jesus didn't advocate the collecting of billions of dollars in his name. He didn't ask for hulking great cathedrals to be built in his name. He didn't ask for the hoarding of billions of dollars worth of art to be stored away whilst people starved and were ignored in the world.
All these regimes were set up with the sole purpose of controlling the masses. They were just given different names and went about it in different ways.

@Francakes

You might want to check your history books (The independent ones with the correct numbers). Christianity has a history filled violence, oppression, torture and (psychological) abuse unrivaled by ANY other regime.

I think modern North Korea, Soviet Russia, Communist China, Nazi Germany and plenty of other anti religious groups have oppressed and killed a lot more people than Christian groups. It's like comparing cops to the military...just because some cops kill people doesn't mean they are equal. They are both really different. Plus Christian groups have a lot of charities that do really good things, from soup kitchens to medical clinics.

okay- lets be reasonable. Torture, Murder, Genocide are all done by people- usually for power and gain- but sometimes in a belief that the hobby they enjoy ( killing people- usually slowly) will make the world better. If it is done in the name of a God then it justifies those terrible acts- but to get others to join in the fun then you need a rallying cry- religious belief works well for this, as does oppression or- well- quite a few things. I have no love for any religion- It is illogical and stifling- but to say that this is the fault of any religion is stretching it. All religions are man made creations and reflect the wishes of the humans of the people within that religion.

@Listypoos - That's exactly what needed to be asked of Crakr and his bullsh*t comment about "Atheist driven regimes" as he calls them. Like you said, the difference is that while they may have been Atheist, their killing wasn't motivated by the fact that they didn't believe in a god.

If you'd like to do a little research on the topic then you should click this link: Mass Crimes Against Humanity & Genocide

It's a pretty thorough listing and description of all crimes against humanity, going back to biblical times, that have been motivated by religion. Keep in mind, this is from a website called "Religious Tolerance" which is neither for, nor against, religion. It's purpose is to try to get others to see that we should all stop the bullsh*t and get along with each other regardless of what you choose to believe.

elkingo - How ironic that those who want to practice freedom of religion seem to want to stifle the freedom of speech of those who oppose them.

SIT DOWN & SHUT YOUR HEAD HOLE.
