And where is the discussion of the millions that have died in Africa from priest telling people that condoms cause AIDS? What about the children succumbing to Polio in countries where Islamic mullas are telling people the vaccine is a Western plot to sterilize Muslims?

SheaSF: Hitler wasn't Catholic, he was into paganism, astrology, and Norse mythology. What's really absurd is that he may have been Jewish himself, but we'll never know for sure because he bombed the town of his birth to the ground.

"And the Bible is a warrant for genocide and slavery."

Okay, now I get it, your a troll.

Please go crawl back under your bridge.

"The atheist regimes of Stalin, Hitler, Mao, Pol Pot, and others..."

Are there any History majors on here that can talk about this? Why is Hitler being thrown in with these Atheists? Everything I have read on him suggest that Hitler was religious, he just stopped attending church. He never left his church.

On the belt buckle of every Nazi soldier were the words GOTT MIT UNS which means "God with Us." So you can try to lay the deaths of millions at the feet of the non religious, but isn't it more likely that there are terrible people in the world who crave power and commit atrocities. There is no evidence that belief in a supernatural being causes people to behave any better than those who rely on reason and evidence.

First of all Hitler was Catholic and had an alliance with Vatican. Hitler's birthday was celebrated each year with declaration from the pulpit. Although privately skeptical in his later years, it was Christianity that lead him to see Jewish people as the problem that needed a solution.

Btw,

This guy raised his hand in nazi salute too. But he also saved over 1200 Jews from the holocaust.

Gerry: The Vatican, in Rome, didn't have any choice when it came to the Italian nazis coming to power. They had to accept their rule over Italy or be invaded themselves. Many in the Vatican helped shuttle Jews and other refugees out of Italy.

So ya, some raised their hands in public, while at the same time smuggling refugees out the back. It was a dangerous tightrope to walk that could've got them all killed.

@TheGuySmiley "is it any wonder people are skeptical of athiest morality & good-will?"

Really? Christians, who make up 81% of the population constitute 84% of prison inmates whereas atheists, who make up 15% of the population only constitute .2% of prison inmates...

I think you're concerned with the morality of the wrong people. lol

Theguysmiley... At first glance his figures look to be a crock of poo. And why is he including in his pie charts the figures for deaths from one particular disease, the plague? He's not included other natural cause figures like influenza, so why that one just to beef out the stats?

Bias. The atheist regimes of Stalin, Hitler, Mao, Pol Pot, and others murdered far more people than died in all the religious wars, persecution, etc, in history. Atheists say that these folks weren't killing in the name of atheism. But the simple fact is that communism is an avowedly atheistic philosophy. These were atheists. The 20th century was by far the bloodiest in history. More people died at the hands of their own governments in the 20th century than were killed in all the wars in history combined before the 20th century. And the vast, vast, majority of this killing was done by atheistic regimes (150 million).

In light of this, is it any wonder people are skeptical of athiest morality & good-will?

@Zach82 - Does Godwin's Rule of Nazi Analogies apply when someone starts the argument with Nazi references?

You are right though.. Reductio ad Hitlerum.

Perhaps as Godwin suggested they should consider the Holocaust a bit more closely.

"We have science behind us to show that the words of the Bible are wrong."

Any "scientist" that seeks to either confirm or deny the existence of a God is simply not a scientist.

Now, if you are going to use science to debate the authenticity of the dead sea scrolls, then don't get pissed when I teach you about the Irish Catholics who preserved other religious documents.

"we can always look at the child rape cases."

Show me one single church covenant that has rape permitted in it. Otherwise, you are going to need to prove that Christianity lead some sicko pervert to either become perverted, or justify rape.

"As if it justifies their own evils."

Right, because when I get off the internet I am going to suit up in platemail and sharpen my sword and ride my noble steed to run the Muslims out of the holy land.

@antagonizer - that isn't the defense. The argument is that mankind will commit atrocities in the name of anything, in order to justify their actions. Cases have been made, for example, that religion has very little if any to do with *insert historical event here*. And to further back it up, cases have been made where religion was not a case.

If you want to believe that Christians are trying to hide something, or be deceptive, go right ahead and believe that. It has been argued to the point that no one cares anymore, and this old rhetoric is getting boring.

"picked on, relentlessly, at school by his/her peers for not believing in the magical floating sky wizard"

First, quit being disrespectful and maybe people won't "pick on you, relentlessly." I think you know referring to the Christian God as a "sky wizard" is flameatory and will cause dissent. If you don't, take this as an education.

Comparing christian based atrocities to those of atheism, is like comparing the Atlantic ocean to a rain puddle.

What I find amusing, is the christian defense that they aren't the only ones to commit crimes against humanity. As if it justifies their own evils.

"How about we look at how an atheist can be denied a job because no religious folks would want one around them."

They applied at chik-fil-a or something?

Seriously, I wouldn't hire someone who banged on about something all the time (religion or lack of).

How did the potential employer know they were an atheist? Did they introduce themselves as one? Did it ask on the application? Is it part of their resume?

I call bullpoo on that.

Cool.. I was wondering if we would see the "Christianity picked on me as a kid.... SCIENCE! Thus that makes it okay to lash out like a 5 year old throwing a tantrum in Toys R us." argument. Thank you patchouly and Kegomatix, you do not disappoint.

@Patchouly

I'm not sure where YOU went to school, but I was openly ridiculed on a daily basis because I DID believe in God. It's a two way street. I actually had a girl tell me that she thought I was really smart until she found out that I believed in God.

@Kegomatix

I've also never had an atheist come up to my door and try to convince me that my religious beliefs are wrong. It does happen every day on the internet though. Then the atheists EXPLICITLY tell me that I'm an idiot for believing in God and no matter what I say or do, they just come back again and compare my faith to nazism. They then try to convince me that their beliefs are not only a better option than mine, but in fact the only legitimate option. Then they follow it all up by telling me that I am intolerant and that they aren't.

As has already been stated, there is a HUGE difference between not agreeing with Christianity and attacking all Christians because of the actions of a vocal majority.
