Nightmares True meanings are What they mean to you. There is alot of truth to dreams,Nightmares and Night terrors, Some have commmon meanings due to common experience but mostly their symbolism is based on individual experience and there fore highly subjective to the individual. A single "Common list can not explain the maajority of their meanings, but only in their most superficial way. Often more important in a dream/nightmare than what is going on is Who were the players. Who was doing what AND Who were only spectators.

All bollocks of course, all these reasons are along the same lines as the stuff spouted by supposed psychics, vague and apply pretty much to all of us.

i was kidding about the zombie attack in the restroom dream, But its the place they will most likely get you . they can smell when you're most defenseless. When I was young I used to experience actual Night Terrors. Mostly now my nightmares are more strange than freightening.

What about the one where everybody's skin is falling off, but they all pretend it isn't happening?

@TheZigRat: ??

If that's the -worst- nightmare you've ever had? You're doing just fine, mate!

I've had nightmares that'd make your toes curl up, srsly, take any horror movie? Those are MILD compared to my "bad dreams"... I think I've seen 1 or 2 that come -close- to my nightmares. Happily they're rare, but I'll remember them forever.

Dreams are NOT all "fun and games" eh? There's a lot of serious stuff going on.

I mean really! With science and everything! Growth hormones, memories, learning, it's ALL tied into sleep and (therefor) dreams. True fact!

Actually the strange thing about college nightmares, college was the best time of my life.
I always received good grades, Never got into arguments and rarely got into any serious trouble.

The Worst nightmare I had was I was in the dorm bathroom sitting on a broken toilet with no stall walls trying to study for a class exam I forgot I was having that day and couldnt remember what subject it was suppoded to be while fighting off a plague of Zombie teachers.

This thread is the most fun I've had in ages on IAB!

Why 5cats- you have a hidden hippie streak-

@madduck: It's not hidden, see?
*lifts up shirt*
Look! It goes right across mah belly!
(I call it a "spiritual" streak, but hippie is correct too!)

@GeoGypsy: I agree! It's so highly sub-jective that "guidelines" are almost useless.
Cats for example, are supposedly "bad". But when I see my beloved pets who've passed away:
Sylvester & Rocky (most frequent)
I'm overjoyed!

@Solvent: Well yeah, usually. But I've had many "deja vu" dreams that later came true, so I just can't say they're all "nothing" eh?
Our minds are mysterious places!
There are many things in this world that science cannot (currently) explain!

@DecoyOctopus: Welcome to IAB! Great name btw.
That's not too bad a dream. The "unreality" of it is a good thing! And wishing to re-unite or get someplace is fairly common.

I OFTEN dream I'm trying to get home to Winnipeg. I'm usually in Alberta or Saskatchewan (rarely in the USA or Ontario) and need to get home somehow. Usually driving (#1!) or flying. It's not scary or disturbing, but it's not "fun" either. Most times my family or friends are there too. Sometimes they're helping, other times they're in the way!

@5Cats Its usually that im trying to get back to my unit somehow, usually lost or separated from them. I never actually see many of them. Most of the time something really bizzare happens, recently a nuke was detonated outside of baghram, and most recently I was drugged with thorazine and dropped off somewhere in country. Also, I use a melatonin/valerian root combo to help me sleep. Works wonders!

I don't really believe in the one size fits all psycho-analysis of dreams. For instance, all of the dreams I can recall in which I found myself nude while surrounded by the clothed are exceptionally liberating. Also, I adore spiders so spiders in my dreams bear positive associations.

Those dreams are about projecting where your current position leads versus where you'd like to be.
When I was younger, I was late and missing the test.
Now, if I have one of those, I'm late for giving a lecture...

@Sutra, given only what I've observed of you through writing, my guess is that's actually about seeing things in others which you don't like to see in yourself and attempting to correct them. Normally, I'd say "stop being your mother" but, for some odd reason, I'm tempted to say "don't be like your father..."

Mikeoxsbiggg: Hopefully, you either opened a doughnut franchise or broke outta that f*cking rut. To test, try to remember which way you drove to and from work and who or what you saw.
If you can't remember...

You're welcome @Link_Hiei! I've tried several 'dream books' and studied it a bit too. Also for Tarot cards (I give frighteningly accurate readings!) and the two have a lot in common.

@CoyoteKing: I often dream I'm returning to a job I'd held before. Sometimes 20+ years ago! Same old bosses, co-workers, store. It's always weird though, which is kinda fun.

@madduck: And anyone who's interested: Melatonin is a perfectly safe & cheap way to have more dreams (and sleep better too!). Over the counter, in 2, 5 and 10mg it's 100% harmless! Even for children (2mg). I have more & better remembered dreams while taking it, plus it helps me fall asleep too! Bonus!

Wiki Says it might take high doses (50mg) to get really wild dreams, lolz!

I rarely remember dreams- but when I do they are so surreal they make NO sense when awake- they made perfect sense whilst waking, all I remember is how I feel. Except for when I was on Champix- then the dreams were vivid, multi coloured and amazing- the only time I have had such great dreams was going to sleep whilst on mushrooms.. an experience I thoroughly recommend if only the once!!

I'm disappointed that server nightmares were not on here. As SoCal mentioned, anyone that was waited tables is all to familiar with them.

@ferdyfred: I've had all of those, but only falling a few times.

When my Dad died I'd have terrible dreams of him. He'd be walking around all gloomy and everyone was ignoring him because he was, you know, dead! It was very upsetting! Now I'm happy to see him (25+ years later) and he's mostly normal.

@Sutra46: I sometimes kill people, but with guns not swords! That's pretty cool! Do yours "stay dead" or do they sometimes get back up again?

@DecoyOctopus: Stress? I'm guessing your Afghan Dreams aren't all "wine & roses" eh? Or are you happy to be with your old unit & buddies?

One thing I don't do is sleepwalk, thank heaven!

@markust: Those are the worst types of bad dreams! YOU feel terrible, but it's hard to explain why, exactly.

@ByOwlPost: Scroll down a bit, others have those!

@emmettyville: The bulls represent the masculine, and the lava the feminine. Drowning children represents the stress of them leaving home (eventually).

@Reignblazer: It means you don't remember your dreams? My brother doesn't. Like, 5 per year he'll remember. I remember 5 every night!!

@Link_Hiei: Much like Tarot Cards, result vary wildly. Freud and others seriously thought dreams were important, but little evidence supports that. There's too much "variety" in individuals to lump all dream symbolism into neat little pigeonholes.

@collegebound: First you were face down and "I can't breathe!" then you rolled on your side and your pillow reminded you of teh boobehs? Subconsiously of course.

Mikeoxsbiggg, that's crazy. I know a chick that does that often and once she woke up half dressed in her car trying to start it. Now she has a husband and kids and they keep an eye on the situation. Some of her stories are funny but others are really scary. I also, know a bunch of guys that wake up and piss on stuff.
