@Azaram: And 3.28% are factual!
(see: 3.28 + 96.72 = 100%, eh?)

Love your avatar, btw!

And 96.72% of statistics are made up on the spot.

SarahofBorg,
"but statistics don't lie."

Actually, 49% of all statistics are male. i.e. liers.
So statistically, almost half of all statistics are lies.

SarahofBorg-"but statistics don't lie."

That is true, but it's very easy to lie about statistics.

The statistic that 'women earn 72 cents for every dollar men make' is easy to missrepresent. They present as 'a woman is making less than a man for the same work', when in reality it represents the average woman's pay vs. the average man's pay accross the population.

Here's a good example: Me (a male) and a co-worker (a female) worked the same job. Last year I made over $20,000 more than she did.

People with an agenda would state 'she gets paid less because she is female'. When the reality is that we both make the same hourly wage. We both have the same opportunity, but I work all available overtime, while she refuses to work any overtime. (and yes, she feels the fact that I made that much more is 'unfair'. But then she's an idiot who doesn't see the connection between 'less work' equals 'less pay'.)

and the departments like the tellers, or the call centres who had statistically more females also had a proportionately higher number of female managers than male like you'd expect if things were fair - and they were paid the same grades. (which was a pittance in the call centre until you got up to senior management levels but they weren't generally promoted from below they were brought in sideways from other areas of the business)

"I've noticed banks almost exclusively hire women. I promise you walk into any bank it has 1 guy for every 10 women."

Nursing or kindergarten teachers probably aren't very balanced either - doesn't mean they've only been hired because of their gender, it may just mean more of one gender are applying in the first place. There are waaaay more midwifes who are female, can that really be put down to a gender pay conspiracy?

I've worked in project manager roles for large banks and I'd say on the teller side it has indeed been more females than men, but more like 2 women to 1 man, not 10-1....and every other area in the banks had pretty much equal numbers I think, except maybe the call centres had slightly more women - but only slightly.

Sarah, you are right statistics don't lie. But they do reqire background information to understand them.

A male and woman graduate law school in the same class.
10 years later the man is earning more than the woman.
Statistially that looks bad.
Reality check:
The man worked 10 years steady to advance himself and career.
The woman took 5 years off to have kids and do the mommy thing. She has worked 5 years and therefore has not gotten the same promotions, yet. After 10 years work she will earn what the man did, but he'll be at 15 years work by then and still be ahead of her.

Also, women are more likely to enter the non-profit arena which typicallyl doesn't pay as much as the corporate world.

There are many reasons for the salary differance, but it does not automatically mean women are "kept down".

A lot of people are saying this is a myth, but statistics don't lie. 5cats, plenty of companies prefer to hire women for this reason. I've noticed banks almost exclusively hire women. I promise you walk into any bank it has 1 guy for every 10 women. So much for being bad a math and finances, though.

I thought it was a diamond engagement ring...

The "women get paid less" myth, again?
Fact: If women WERE paid less, most companies would hire ALL women and make bigger profits! Duh! There's other factors involved. Days off, maternity leave, no overtime, no travel & etc.

What everyone's missing is that is her BOSS'S Junk.

It's obvious the minute she has her Boss's junk, she'd immediatly increased her yearly income, decreased her workload and gets to decide what other biotches get fired.

Squrlz, your experience is normal. This WAS true in the 70s & 80s but isn't now. But the myth lingers on because women like to go on Dr. Phil & The View an bitch about stuff so it's now an urban legend kinda thing.

MythBusters should look into this!

Ah, the bitter strain of feminism. In my field (information technology) at my company, the women who are working *like the men* are earning as much or more. But a large share of the women have taken extended leaves or even left for a few years and returned to spend time with their children, and, yes, they got passed over on merit raises when they weren't working... which, I dunno, seems kinda fair to me.

I'll concede that some women doing the exact same work in some fields may be earning less. I'm just saying I haven't seen it in my field.

"Gerry: My mom made more $$$ as a nurse than my dad did with skilled union wages. So I'm a lot less likely to believe this wage discrimination BS."

It's getting paid less for doing the exact same job, dear.

Women earn about 5-10% less than men with the same job and position. However, the difference has been attributed to non-sexist reasons such as men being more likely to work extra-hours.

My mum sent me and my mates a dot-to-dot porn book to cheer us up when I was away in the military. It was pretty funny.

Okay, someone has to say it to open the flood gates of hate-mail. I'll bite the bullet.

Women do not earn less than men. That is a myth.

Okay ..... go
