Any person that is compelled to leave a note like that for a total stranger does not deserve the graces of god.

Did all you blow-hards forget to look through the comments and read what AvatarJohn had to say? Take the time to find that comment and you will find...the simple plain truth.

This "pastor" is a horrible excuse for a human being and should not giving anyone life advice. If anyone deserves to get fired it is the pastor from her job. I hope the waiter finds work quickly.

When I served, the hourly wage was $2.30. I think it's a whopping $3-something now. I always tip SOMETHING, even if I got bad service; they'll just get less. I had a day so bad I didn't even have the $12 I needed to pay my babysitter.

A lot of places in the U.S. make the tip mandatory for large parties, because the waitress usually can't take a lot of other tables because tending to a large group take a lot. It will say somewhere on the menu "For parties of ten or more people a 15% gratuity is included in the bill". Servers are only paid 2 or 3 dollars an hour, so tips are very important!

@Zieveraar: Mostly correct.
If she's already left the tip (which the Pastor says) then she's not required to tip again! So she is free to scratch it out.
The 18% IS INDEED a "suggestion".
Some bills put suggested tips on, others don't.
When in Canada or the USA, a tip of between 10% > 25% (pre tax) is expected, but not required by law or anything.
But bad service should NEVER get a tip.

Still confused? lolz! No worries mate! We're not all that sure ourselves.

("No worries mate" is Australia's #1 contribution to the world, thanks mates!)

Arcval-"waiting staff decent pay and not tipping except for exceptional service."

That would be ideal. But multiplying labor costs 3x will result in higher priced food, which will drive some customers away, which is not good for business.

It might not make 'sense', but some people willing to pay $10 for a burger, fries and drink and leaving a $5 tip would not be willing to pay $14 for the same meal, sans tip.

I don't get this whole tipping thing though. The pastor scratches out the 18% line, leaves 6 USD (this is what really makes her an idiot if she's complaining about 6.29 being too much, which imo it is but that's another matter), but afterwards does see that the 18% was added to her bill anyway? That's theft isn't it? That would be more than enough to have me call and ask for someone to be held accountable. If I read the comments here, the 18% on that bill is a suggestion, right? Or is that wrong?

This would all be a moot issue if americans copied europeans by paying waiting staff decent pay and not tipping except for exceptional service. Much easier and the bill at the end of the meal is the same.

Limiteded, I think we can come to that conclusion because sometimes sacrifice is required for justice to be served. I *do* think it's just that the diner was called out and shamed. But, too, I have to agree with MeGrendel and 5Cats that the company can't let the waitress' actions slide. If it were my company, I'd let it slide. And maybe pay the price in lost customers. And maybe I really wouldn't if faced with it? Maybe I'm just talking big. I'd like to think I would support the waitress, though. But, sadly, as a national company, I think they did what they had to. I hope that the diner learned a lesson and that serving that lesson and getting some justice for her colleague was worth it for our waitress.

If we can agree that justice was served by the photo going viral and this lady receiving the 'just desserts' of her actions,

How do we then agree that the company involved served justice by firing the whistle-blower?

No worries @SmagBoy!
idk if she really left a tip or not either! I'm just pointing out that no where, in any of the reports on this, does anyone DENY she left a tip.
And it wasn't the origional waitress who posted it, it was a co-worker.

But for sure: It was a DUMB and rude note to leave. I 100% agree.

All Christians, but especially "church leaders" are supposed to BE GOOD examples of their faith!

Dumb note = NOT what Jesus would do...

Okay, 5Cats, I agree with your sequence of events, except that there's no way she left a cash tip. That's just after-the-fact spin. Otherwise why the rude ass note. As for the rest, I understand what you and MeGrendel are saying. I do. I just think that it's extremely rude to leave no tip when going out to eat. I think it's even more rude to do so along with a nasty note. And even more, more so while using God as a justification. But you're correct, posting the signature was too far.

5Cats, the patron's name is irrelevant without tons of other info.

@SmagBoy: Are you joking? "Pastor Alois Bell" pretty much narrows it down to ONE PERSON yes?
Applebee's clearly WAS identified, ask @bophus about that!
So the "waitress" did indeed identify the patron AND the business. OK?
I see you've already agreed, so that's good.

Leaving a private message doesn't give a 3rd party permission to publicly attack you, it's simple.

The sequence of events is:
Pastor left $6 cash tip
Went to pay bill
Wrote stupid note

NO ONE is disputing this, ok? Saying "She felt guilty and went back and left some money" is BLIND SPECULATION of the meaningless variety...

@slotherder: Slander? Privacy laws? There's laws against it, one way or another.

Why leave the nasty note, then turn around and leave almost the exact amount on the table?

@Smutleybutt: If the $6 cash was already tipped, she has every right to scratch out the "18%" part. The nasty note? Was stupid. VEry stupid. She's admitted that.

@bophus: I didn't say "credit card info" but @SmagBoy claimed that Applebee's wasn't identified. Merchant ID means it WAS.
If she'd already left the cash, she is free to scratch out the 18%... NOT to be nasty about it however.

IF the reciept had been posted without the Merchant ID and the signature? NO one would have been fired. THAT is the problem here.

SmagBoy1-" there's nothing that was posted that could cause the patron to lose money"

I dissagree: her signature was released, as was her identity and her place of employment. It also infuriated a lot of people who might now think that she is 'fair game'.

SmagBoy1-"I were company I might decide to take the heat on this one"

And admit to the world you condone mistreatment of customers? THAT would do wonders for their business. A press statement means nothing. It might as well say 'Hey, we don't condone abusing customers, but we willing hire people that do.'.

SmagBoy1-"we also will not abide customers treating our staff in this manner."

What manner? That she didn't leave a tip? If a waitress can't handle that, nor rude customers, she has no business being a waitress.

crucifyed4us, she signed the check with "pastor". Had she not done that, we WOULDN'T EVEN HAVE KNOWN! That's the ONLY reason her being is pastor is being mentioned, because it's so effing ironic that she was such a bitch while claiming to be a servant of the Lord. Irony much?

MeGrendel, ultimately you're right. The waitress shouldn't have posted the receipt with the signature visible. So, I agree. And, yes, companies *do* have to protect patrons. So I agree.

That said, there's nothing that was posted that could cause the patron to lose money, have her identity hacked, her credit threatened, etc.

So, because of that, and how crappily she treated her waitress (not the one who posted, but the other), if I were company I might decide to take the heat on this one, saying that while "we don't condone what our employee did, we also will not abide customers treating our staff in this manner. As a result, we've engaged in training our staff on appropriate behavior." Etc.

I think the most offensive person in this scenario, by FAR, was the bitch "pastor". And my sense of justice is okay with her being outed.

I don't understand what the fact that she is a Pastor has to do with her being a bitch... If this had been any other person would you care? No, because it wouldn't involve trying to discredit someone who believes in a god you don't believe in yet have such a huge problem with.

@BoredFrank: I'd wager she's a baptist. They don't really believe in the higher system of church like catholics or even other protestants do, like cardinals, bishops, pope etc. They only have pastors and deacons. iirc it isn't that hard to become a baptist pastor.
