I's sure like to see this treatment of Canadian immigration laws. I now many are similar, but we sure manage to get an amazing number of people sucking at the social support teat who have never worked a day in this country. |

You get a lot of <engage snob mode> lower class, thick draters in the uk moaning about eastern europeans who don't speak the language coming over and taking all their jobs.
well.... if someone new to a country and can't speak your language manages to come and take your job you can't have been very good at it. |

erm....to inform people of the reality as opposed to what some fat bloke down the pub told them?
you know immigration is quite a hot topic in the UK at the moment and there are a LOT of people who think that immigrants come here and just get given a house and loads of benefits ... jumping the queue of native brits who may need the same benefits.
Basicallly it's mostly bollocks.... my g/f is a legal advisor for an organisation in the uk called the Citizen's Advice Bureau - they give out free legal advice and advise people on what state help is available. When someone says something like 'oh these immigrants get everything they ask for'...etc. etc. and she says 'well actually no they don't, they're only entitled to x, y, or z after so long in this country and it's far less than a native brit'....they don't want to listen to the truth, because the myths and rumours they've heard fit in so much better with what th |

The lady that runs my Chinese restaurant just became a citizen a few weeks ago. I was so happy for her because she's really awesome and puts great food in my belly. Damn now I have to go order Chinese. |

This is an argument for reforming LEGAL immigration, not an argument for throwing up our hands and for legalizing illegal immigrants b/c the system is too difficult.
But even with legal immigration reform, there will still be long waits, and it will still be difficult for everyone. Why? Because more people want to enter the US than want to leave the US. So long as that fact is true, it will be difficult to immigrate, and it SHOULD be difficult to immigrate. It's standard supply/demand ecomonics.

We've tried amnesty before, under Reagan. It was a failure because Mexicans are too suspicious of the government to voluntarily seek legal immigration.
This time around will be no different. Besides, living as illegals they don't pay payroll taxes. Most work as 1099 independent contractors under fake SS numbers and fake IDs. |

But you can still live/work/go to school in the US without being a citizen, you only need a green card, right? So who cares if it takes that long to be a citizen, you don't need to be one to achieve what most immigrants are trying to achieve. |
