markust: You didn't look very hard because there were several 'powerboats' in that list. Besides that, the term 'Yachts' does not exclude sailboats and all the boats I found in that list have engines.
Secondly, boat shows are for suckers. Those are the high retail prices. Good quality yachts can be had for much less than you've been led to believe by boat show salesmen. |

'Ive got a 2000 subaru Forester eg..
running for 12 years, its covered its carbon footprint of manufacture keep it going its technically green, buy a new toyota prius
do you actually know the damage it causes to make it?
its astonishing, green solar etc.. need to read the grass roots
I run old cars they was made back in the day,
dont need any more C02 etc for a new one
electric cars - meh still need to charged up by a cable - which is conected up to a point -
which is powered by - coal - oil plants -
non brainer

You're including sailboats. This video and your point was about powerboats. When people think of yachts most think of powerboats. If someone invited me out for a ride on their yacht and it turned out to be a sailboat I'd be confused. My family has chartered a 50' sailboat twice. Not once did we call either a yacht. They were sailboats. All the (powerboat) yachts in your link are 2007 except one which is 2011. Those are all used with no mention of the hours on the engines. A new 50ft (powerboat) yacht starts in the $1 million range. You could probably get one for $800,000 but it would be a pile of crap with small engines. I'm not trying to be a dick. I just go to a lot of boat shows. I dream of yachts but the cost always brings me back to reality. |

Killerhipo: The point of cargo ship deck space is for carrying cargo, not solar panels. Plus the way cargo ship containers and cranes are designed, solar panels would just get in the way. |

All I could think of the whole time I was watching was that this would be amazing for cargo ships. For a boat that is 2 times bigger than another it only requires an engine 1.5 times stronger. This makes me wonder if maybe there is a point in ship size where the normal area of a cargo ship deck could provide enough area for solar panels to power it alone. |

BrimstoneOne: The planetsolar boat is 31ft. After a brief search I found many used 30 to 45ft. yachts for under $250,000. You can buy a brand new 50ft. yacht for under $500,000.
$12 million dollars worth of fuel and supplies would be over 10 years of yachting fun using fossil fuel. |

As for the cost of the boat, as a luxury yacht, at 12.5 million Euros it be about the middle of the pack regarding it's size to cost. Probably PlanetSolar would be cheaper to run due to rise cost of fossil fuel. |

Hey, I love new technology as much as the next guy but I'd also like to know how much that rig cost and how long the trip took.
But kudos to them for good job. I hope to see the day that solar power becomes a really viable option. |

Now please tell us how many millions of dollars it took to build that boat. Then compare that to a boat of similar size and how long/far that boat would travel using conventional fuel, if those extra millions went into buying fuel.
No single purpose-built solar-powered vehicle will ever out perform a normally fueled vehicle considering price points.
Which is better, a $100 million dollar boat that you'll never have to fuel, but the batteries and panels will die out in 5 years, Or is it better to buy a $1 million dollar boat that you have to fuel, but you'll be able to sail it for 20 years before you need to replace the engine? |

These types of things are great and all but if you want to impress me then find a way to make solar practical, econonmical, works for many power needs, and fits my definition of affordable, not yours. |
