Wednesday, January 30, 2013 2:32:27 PM "What motivation is there for a server to do a good job knowing that no matter how bad they screw up they're getting 18%??? " every restaurant I myself or friends of mine have worked at, if you complain to management about the grat because of the service, they will usually remove it. plus the 18% isn't always a good thing. i have had people tip me less than they normally would have due to auto grat. customers that usually tip 20-25% but when the auto grat comes out they dont bother to bump it up the extra 2-7% on top of the 18% and instead just sign on the dotted line. |

Wednesday, January 30, 2013 2:27:56 PM GRATUITY : something given voluntarily or beyond obligation usually for some service; especially: TIP It's for service. Good service gets more, bad service gets less or none. What motivation is there for a server to do a good job knowing that no matter how bad they screw up they're getting 18%??? Also, although I know it's the norm, why should the server get a percentage? It's the same amount of service if I order a glass of water or a glass of champagne - a cheeseburger or a filet... If I'm truly supplementing their measly hourly rate (way to go employer), then the half hour they spent with me for a $10 tip (assuming they waited only on me that hour) just took that rate from $2/hr to $12/hr. That doesn't even cover the scenario where tips are pooled or shared with other staff like busboys or hostesses. And how many servers do we think actually voluntarily report their tips (regardless of whether they would actually incur any in |

Wednesday, January 30, 2013 2:22:23 PM If I've said it once, I've said it a drating thousand times, when you go out to eat in the US at a place with waitstaff, you are entering into a social contract. Unless that waitperson does something to deserve a reduced or no tip, you are drating assmunching douchebag extraordinaire if you don't tip. And you should be beaten with a rubber hose. That's stealing. Plain and simple. It's legal thievery, no different than if someone reached in your wallet and pulled out money. non-nice individuals! |

Wednesday, January 30, 2013 2:21:38 PM “As a former waiter, I firmly believe you EARN your tips. It encourages good service, and shows respect to your customers." As a former waiter myself I will have to call you out on your bull poo. You should know that with a large group (this case 20 people) that 100% of your time and effort goes to pretty much just that one table. And they hang around a long time usually. And when the split checks are paid at the end, if there is not grat, a lot of people will mistakenly underpay or not tip, assuming it was included when it wasn't, or they are cheap, or thinks someone else will make up for their crappy tipping. Its there to protect the server since they dont have any other tables. |

Wednesday, January 30, 2013 2:19:15 PM MacGuffin, don't be weird. Also, if I had to pick another country's healthcare, it would never be the NHS. Not in a million years. It is the worst universal healthcare system of the developed world. Even we have higher cancer survival rates without full coverage. Imagine that. Canada is better. But I will point out that nothing is free. Seriously. And tipping - what are you talking about, you're being weird. If you're deranged about another country's culture when it comes to tipping, you have other, deep seated issues going on. Waiters feel entitled to tips because that's their job, that's how they make money. If they provide a good service, they can make bank. If they deliver bad service, they struggle to meet minimum wage. Many lefties are cool and interesting people, you're one of the weird ones though. You're basically the Rush Limbaugh of the left. Deranged, dazed and confused. You should be proud. |

Wednesday, January 30, 2013 2:18:04 PM linkenberger- his point wasn't about mandatory tipping, it was about tipping at all. Notice he didn't replace the mandatory tip with any tip whatsoever. Trutenrman- You do realize that waiters and waitresses in this country are paid sub-mininum wage due to the assumption of gratuities. They literally live off of tips. Other countries don't do it that way so that argument is irrelevant. Just own your cheapness. |

Wednesday, January 30, 2013 2:14:16 PM @TruTenrMan: auto grat is not crap. it is there to protect the server. when large groups (usually 8 or more) are splitting up a check and paying separately a lot of the tip is forgotten. not that people are trying to but dividing up a check some people forget to pay for an item and that just gets paid by the tip in the end. or they assume someone else is taking care of the tip but that person isn't. it is very important in a case like this were there was a group of 20 people that were all paying separately. in your case that you think it is a reward, you clearly dont know how the service industry works and have never put yourself in their shoes. most states pay servers $2.13 an hour and that is only so they can tax their tips. the only money they make is on tips. you cant afford to tip? or just dont want to? then dont go to a restaurant, go to a fast food joint or cook at home. but every time you go out to eat you need to expect to pay a proper tip. |

Wednesday, January 30, 2013 2:09:54 PM As a guy who tips 20% average (and there have been several times where I spite-tip two cents with a brief list of weaknesses I suggest improving), while I don't agree with how this guy is going about it I agree with him. Mandatory gratuities are MORONIC. Why the hell should I have to give you 18% of the money I spent on your food regardless of if you were timely with the order, frequent with the refills and cordial with your service? I make a point of never returning to resturants who enforce mandatory tips, even if they had good food and service. As a former waiter, I firmly believe you EARN your tips. It encourages good service, and shows respect to your customers. |

Wednesday, January 30, 2013 2:03:10 PM They also don't give it to "God", people, you know what he meant. He gives it to a church or charity (some of which DO pay some taxes). |

Wednesday, January 30, 2013 2:02:19 PM Automatic gratuity is crap. Tipping is a reward for good service and should never be assumed. Hell, in most cultures, tipping is considered rude as the person being tipped is DOING THEIR JOB. |

Wednesday, January 30, 2013 1:31:05 PM Biggest difference between Brits and Septics: we'll never understand how you can bitch and moan at the prospect of a taxpayer-funded, free at point of service, healthcare system like the NHS. Yet almost all Yanks have a sense of self-entitlement when it comes to tipping that would embarrass most dictators. |
