Wednesday, January 30, 2013 7:31:22 AM They should have specified that the G was pronounced like the g in light, the i like the i in suit and the f like the f in halfpenny. |

Wednesday, January 30, 2013 7:26:02 AM If another continent can put in its tuppenceworth, Jif used to be a brand of toilet cleaner this side of the pond, until they wanted to sell it somewhere j-less, and changed the name to Cif (pronounced siff, not chiff or kiff). Possibly there was also a chance of Jif peanut butter being sold here - though I'd hold out for Goober's with the strawberry jelly, or jam, but save that for another day.... So here we would be told to pronounce it jiff, like the peanut butter we don't get, or the toilet cleaner that is now called Cif. Yeah, gif as in gift, then. |

Wednesday, January 30, 2013 4:07:33 AM I don't give a flying frog fart whether some self-proclaimed internet expert proclaimed once upon a time that it was pronounced "jif" just cuz they felt like it ... g-i-f stands for "Graphics Interchange Format" ... "Graphics...", not "Jraphics". Therefore I will continue to say it correctly - "gif". The End. :) |

Wednesday, January 30, 2013 3:16:01 AM I just keep thinking of Aluminium and why it is pronounced Aluminum over in the US - I blame the Enterprise car adverts we have running at the moment. |

Wednesday, January 30, 2013 3:00:30 AM The letter "g" comes close to following a phonics rule similar to the one for the letter "c" in that it is always pronounced /g/ unless it is followed by an "e," "i" or "y." So, while it's true that the letter "g" makes the /j/ sound only when followed by "e," "i" or "y," you can’t be certain that it will be pronounced /j/. In some such cases "g" still makes the /g/ sound. Seems lejit... |

Tuesday, January 29, 2013 11:14:58 PM But the "G" stands for "Graphics" so it should be a hard "G" - sort of like people who don't know how to pronounce their own name, I will continue to pronounce it correctly even if they don't. My friend's wife, an English major and a book editor, once called someone with the name "Cervantes" and addressed her as Mrs. Cervantes, to which the ignorant bitch replied "It's pronounced 'Sir Van Tease' " to which my friend's wife continued to address her as Mrs. Cervantes, because really, there is no way I'm going to say it like that, even if you tell me to, because it is incorrect. If you name it the "Graphics Interchange Format" it is pronounced GIF like GIFT because the "G" stands for "Graphics". End of discussion. |

Tuesday, January 29, 2013 9:44:27 PM Hey, you can call it whatever you want. But now you know you're not calling it by its intended name. And I'm sure there's products out there with names pronounced differently from the spelling that you still use anyway. Picky little hypocritical bastards aren't you. |
