Monday, January 28, 2013 4:07:12 PM I explained myself badly. Circumcison is, in my opinion, usually wrong because an intrusive procedure, a cutting of flesh, a change to the body must always require either informed consent or a pressing medical need. Apparently the large majority of American parents (and physicians?) think that the health/hygene benefits justify the procedure. I don't agree but there is evidence on both sides. That's being wrong, not being an idiot. Religion, c'mon. It would be nice if you allowed the kid to grow up and decide for themselves before cutting your religion into them but we have to respect belief. Seriously, that's how it is. The fix is in. Belief trumps common humanity. But this tattoo, we can all have a go at that.

Monday, January 28, 2013 2:59:31 PM LordJim: Circumcision is IMO worse than baby tattoos. It hurts more, has more and more serious complications, mutilates the sex organ and removes a part that can not be put back (a tattoo can mostly be removed), etc... Also, it is often performed by trained medical professionals - so they can even excuse themselves due to ignorance. |

Monday, January 28, 2013 12:46:57 PM Personally, I'm not a fan of piercing a baby's ear either. Causing your child pain for a fashion statement that YOU want them to make is just ridiculous (acceptable, but still ridiculous). Tattooing them is beyond ridiculous or acceptable. I'm with Jacob on the circumcision issue. Unnecessary and painful body mod forced on an infant for any reasons is immoral to me. |

Monday, January 28, 2013 12:12:49 PM LordJim... "Circumcision is a bad comparison; most people have it done because they believe it has health benefits (debatable but a valid reason)..." Nope. Even if there were provable benefits (which as you say, is debatable), that wouldn't justify circumcision. In no other area of medicine do we forcibly remove healthy body parts from infants to guard against ailments that won't even be an issue until at least over a decade later in the individual's life when other readily available methods (i.e. condoms), are provably more effective at stopping disease. "...or for religious purposes (not a valid reason in my opinion, but it's a complicated issue.)" It's not complicated at all. Not in the the slightest. Forcible removal of body parts for religious reasons is *immoral*. At the end of the day, both involve non-consensual, painful alteration of an individual's body. I know I'm probably coming off as harsh and standoffish, b |

Monday, January 28, 2013 12:09:53 PM This tat takes way longer than circumcision and is more painful. The area is anesthetized with the ol' snipperooni. Have you seen one done? Not by the National Health, a real one. |

Monday, January 28, 2013 11:23:39 AM Most parents want their kids to have better life chances than they did. This one, not so much. Circumcision is a bad comparison; most people have it done because they believe it has health benefits (debatable but a valid reason) or for religious purposes (not a valid reason in my opinion, but it's a complicated issue.) This is neither valid nor complicated; it's abuse. |

Monday, January 28, 2013 11:22:37 AM has nobody considered the fact that there could be a valid reason for this? hell no not fashion. for instance, a pair of twins who need medical care are often marked in this way (albeit on the feet generally), or he could have a rare blood type, or perhaps a medical problem requiring a medalart bracelet but the mom knows that being a toddler, he'll lose it or get strangled... don't judge until the full story is revealed. and I am completely against fashion tattooing for anyone not old enough to decide on it themselves, and circumcision for the same. |

tedgp, "Now now americans. I hope you arent complaining about this. After all, you are the country that cuts the skin off newborn penises for no reason whatsoever." That's not true. We have a reason. We make face cream out of it. Timely dude, I just submitted a story about this very topic. |

Monday, January 28, 2013 9:14:27 AM They used to do this as a ritual in some lower classes/casts in India. The tats were tribal and were 'small' mono coloured ( green) sometime on the face! Don't know if this young though. Poor baby |
