The reward was the journey. The map leads to a room with a big X on the floor and a mirror which should give that away. They look in the mirror and see that they became the people they wanted to be and formed a strong friendship and gained a lot of memories along the way. A reward that isn't physically tangible. They pass the map on at the end so that those 2 kids can go on their own adventure. |

I think they just thought the reward was the progress they made as people, friends, and heros. that, or they thought the treasure had already been taken, seeing as how they found the map from a previous hero.
I just love the animation, and the characters. |

I did @Gauddith: I wondered about it too.
Was it "irony"? There WAS a huge treasure there, but they didn't NEED it?
Or they didn't care because they already had everything they needed (except cute girls, which they got later)?
Or it's still there so many more "heroes" will come, yet not bother to claim it also?
