Way to go for the waiter and the restaurant. It looks like a swanky Italian, which in my experience means they are really nice people. I used to take my kid outside when he played up and ask him if he wanted to go home or sit with the grown ups and he always calmed down, from the age of 1 I could take him anywhere. Just a tip for any new parents. All kids play up, special needs or not but you don't do that. |

Clue: If you're a non-nice individual, you tend to get non-nice responses.
I've never agreed with the proposition that 'the customer is always right'.
Sometimes the customer is an asswipe, and should be treated accordingly.
Of course, my tendency to treat them accordingly is the reason I don't have a job where I deal with the public. 98% of customers are either great or tolerable.
Dealing with the other 2% just wasn't worth it. |

That's not what happened here. The waiter refused to serve them. The rude asswipes decided to leave rather than ask for another server.
The OWNER can throw them out. Every single server can refuse to server them.

Hey, he bothered the server. That's enough.
It's a JOB. Not indentured servitude. He can refuse to serve you for any reason whatsoever. But, if he does it for arbitrarty reasons, he will lose his job.
In this case, the owner backed him up. Rightly so. |

So if a waiter doesn't like what you say, even if no one around you is offended, he can throw you out.
Suppose he doesn't like your pro-Obama button? Or pro-Romney tshirt? What if he doesn't like your religious referance? No, if you haven't bothered the other customers the waiter is there to serve food. If he wants to be a judge of society let him become a judge or preacher or politician. |

I agree, it has nothing to do with dissability.
I cancelled an order and walked out of a restaurant once because a 5 year old (with no appearant problem) decided go into one continuous scream at the top of her lungs, and her parents thought the appropriate way to handle it was to ignore it.
The restaurant was in a mall, and we could still hear the child screaming from 200 feet away.
At least 5 groups of people either walked out without eating, or turned around before even going in.
First, the parents should have disciplined and/or removed the child.
Secon, the parents deserved an asswipin for being horrible parents. |

For me, it depends on how the kid was behaving. If he was just a regular downs kid, then no worries. If he was flinging scat, then I'd have moved and had the same thoughts. |

My sister was Down Syndrome, she passed away in 2006. I know how society treats these individuals, and I say "brava" to that waiter. |

If it is an upscale restaurant where we will be dropping some serious money--I do not want to be near any kid of any kind. Any place else, well, you take your chances. This kind of rudeness, though, is completely unacceptable. I waited tables throughout college & I was lucky enough to work for people who valued good manners, but, also, light hearts. people need to lighten the f*ck up sometimes. |

I applaud this waiter and wish I lived clos enough to Houston to thank him personally.
I have a special needs daughter. Restaurant visits for my family at times can be hard. We do our best to keep things from bothering other patrons but sometimes things happen.
The children themselves do not ask for this to happen to them. They cannot help that they are prone to loud outbursts or something along those lines. I've been given dirty looks and even been told to "shut that kid up".
I'm sure people like @Gerry1of1 have never had to experience what parents like myself endure on a daily basis so I generally take comments like his for what they're worth.
At the end of the day it pleases me to know there are people like this particular waiter who are worried about more than just their tip. |

I worked as a waiter at an uppity establishment and one night a couple had a reservation they had to wait for. They decided to take it out on the hostess so badly that they made her cry. when the manager saw this he went up to them and said you no longer have a reservation here and told them to leave. In a private bussiness you have the right to refuse a customer being out of line.... well if you're the owner or if the owner agrees with you. |

Well done that man.
Gerry, just because someone is a waiter that does not make them your vassal or bond-servant. He was perfectly within his rights. Of course he loses a customer and takes the risk of losing his job but that's his call.
I teach kids with special needs and often take them out to eat - learning how to use a modest but decent restaurant is an important skill. Staff have always been delightful and put in extra effort. More than once they have returned the tip and asked for it to go towards something for the kids. Obviously this waiter felt protective towards the lad and did the right thing. |

Of course you have to watch what you say. Freedom of Speech doesn't imply any freedom of consequences from your actions or opinions. You may be able to say anything you want but others are entitled to judge you based on what you say. |

Servers can reserve the right to serve who they want. The owner then has the right of supporting them or firing them. |
