That completely depends on how 'extreme poverty' is defined and how much it would take per person per day to raise that to another higher level of poverty.
In some parts of the world, $10 a day is considered to be middle class. Here in America that would still be desperate poverty, pretty much homelessness. Considering that disparity of terms, one can't possibly calculate what it would take to eliminate poverty adequately.

That's your opinion, here in America. In some parts of the world, the fact that you use water to flush your toilet is considered 'obscene', because clean water is so scarce and precious to them.

@HG, Crakr, I see both sides to it but i think it's a question of scale. These days realistically thats not all that much, sure its more than I'll ever see and I would probably do something helpful with it if I had it but certainly Crakr is right in the fact you cant make a judgement like that when you know nothing of what the man does with his money currently or is planning to do with anythign he earns in the future.
Sure if I knew you were a billionaire (the 21st century equivalent to the past century's millionaire) and you did nothing charitable with it then I can make that judgement and I'm sure Crakr would agree too. |

It was a hypothetical. The point is every time you make any purchase you are choosing to spend money on that instead of everything else you could spend it on.

Not at all. I have lots of nice things. However at some point it gets obscene. If you have a BMW, good for you. If however you have a custom BMW with platinum detailing on the interior and diamond inlays then you are an a.sshole. |

I'd pick neither. You're making this an extreme ends argument. How do you know that this guy doesn't already give a lot to charity? You don't. Plus you have no idea what his plans are for this car. It could be he'll charge admission to see it and then donate those funds to charity (which could easily add up to more than he paid for the car).
You're saying that people can't buy nice things because some people are doing badly. Sorry, but that's not how the world works and your utopian redistributing wealth socialist ideal won't ever solve that problem.
There will always be have and have-nots. Right now I'm in the category of 'have-not' and I don't begrudge this buyer one bit, I'm happy for him. |

No. Certainly not. But it is choosing not to save them.
Let's frame it this way. If you had 4 million dollars and I said you have two choices: You can buy a car to sit in your living room, or you can feed 5,000 starving children for a year, what would you choose? Now he wasn't offered a choice that directly, but fundamentally he made that choice. He knows all the suffering out there that money could ease and instead he chose to have the bat mobile in his living room.
I find that choice reprehensible. Just as I do in the case of the guy that builds a private golf course in his backyard or gilds the ceiling of his office in gold.
Sometimes I wish I did believe in heaven because I would love to think of those guys standing in front of the Pearly Gates explaining those choices. |

Really? Is that how you're going frame this argument? Buying a 4.2 million dollar car is killing children? You know that is not only a facetious but hyperbolic accusation.
The Barret-Jackson auction had several vehicles for sale, as every year, sold just for charity. Those charities included those dedicated to ending hunger and St. Jude's hospital, among others. |

If I had hundreds of millions of cash to burn, I could... say... spend perhaps 50K on one car, the other two or three would be junkers to mess around with. I'd spend the rest getting high & building my spaceship. |

Gerry: No, Jay Leno wasn't the buyer. I seen the auction live on the Speed Channel last night. Two guys bid the same amount and they flipped a coin to decide who would take it home.
It was an exciting round of bidding and I was kind of in shock after the hammer went down. |

Even if I had hundreds of millions of dollars, I couldn't spend more than 150 grand on a car. Not only can almost any car be souped up enough to gain ridiculous amounts of power, but a GT-R costs less than 100k and does 0-60 in 2.8 seconds. It can destroy most supercars that cost 1 mil+. I don't care if this car is a collectible, not worth 4 million. |
