Saturday, January 19, 2013 9:08:24 PM they start comparing the us to the world they end with comparing the UK to only the EU, which is much smaller. Being 4th in the EU is much different than 4th in the world. Just lost credibility. |

Wednesday, January 16, 2013 1:20:18 PM @Palfas: Obama's Orders are out: no eating of words by me! Most are "window dressing" designed to LOOK useful but in fact? Do nothing. Some few make sense, it's true. Others are "time bombs" they look simple enough NOW, but have the potential for vast mis-use and removal of freedoms. Oh, but the US Gov't would NEVER do that ('Japanese' Internment Camps) right? (Japanese is in " because they were, in fact, full US Citizens, some 2nd or 3rd generation!) |

Wednesday, January 16, 2013 12:55:49 PM @dang007 you are putting up numbers for different things, what's the point? Having somebody actually go through the data and provide something that is the same would be very interesting - I have no idea where it would come out but putting up data that is for different things achieves nothing but confusion. |

Wednesday, January 16, 2013 11:19:24 AM @Holy God: Think thou do protest to much. 2009 (only year I could find data for in the 10 min. I looked.) US violent crime (includes murder, Forcable rape, robbery, and Aggrevated assult.) 429.4 per 100,000 UK (Data below, I tried to find the def of Violence against person but assuming it DOES include the offences listed here the rate subtracting out what is NOT included in the US is ~800/100,000. Still not sure the UK is better. In England and Wales, there were 880,000 "Violence against the person" crimes in 2008–9, equivalent to 16 per thousand people. There were about 50,000 sexual offences during the same period, just under 1 per thousand. Other areas of crime included robbery (80,000; equivalent to around 1.5 crimes/per thousand), burglary (285,000; 5 per thousand) and vehicle theft (150,000; 3 per thousand).[8] |

Wednesday, January 16, 2013 10:40:12 AM Holy f.ucking s.hit. Why on earth do we have to have the same debate. OF COURSE Britain has a higher violent crime rate. For f.uck sake. Brittan calls indecent exposure a violent crime. In the USA the FBI calls a violent crime: murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. Britain adds burglary, domestic violence and ALL sexual offenses. Compare apples to apples and it isn't even close. Let's have an intelligent debate. Stop being f.ucking retarded. |

Wednesday, January 16, 2013 9:52:28 AM @5cats "Until Obama "drops a bomb" tomorrow it's kinda pointless to have a sane & rational discussion. He's going to go "full retard" and the USA will suffer for it. But y'all voted for him!" Sane and rational is the last thing I would call this thread. Are you going to eat your words or move the goal posts when Obama proposes sensible legislation instead of going "full retard" |

Wednesday, January 16, 2013 9:32:28 AM While I agree the stats Morgan presents are misleading (of course there are fewer GUN murders in a country with fewer GUNS, that doesn't mean there are fewer murders), the problem I have with this response is that they cite equally misleading stats. In the UK if I shout a slur at you or spit on you, that is reported as a violent crime. This is not the case in the U.S. so comparing those stats is wholly unfair and misleading. Why does no one seem interested in reporting the overall murder rate of both countries? I mean that stat (which would have to be the most fair) must favor one side of the argument or the other, why is no one siting that? |

Wednesday, January 16, 2013 8:03:55 AM Stats can be manipulated to support any argument. In fact in a recent study 72% of all stats were found to be false. @kcpd2050: I completely DIS-agree! Don't you know that 28% of all stats are absolutely true? (hint: 72 + 28 = 100% I am making a funny here) @madduck: We'd need a hitman who uses a knife, or poison... |

Tuesday, January 15, 2013 5:53:55 PM @queenzira, we have ARV units (armed response vehicles) that are on standby with highly trained firearms officers, normal units hold back if guns are sighted or suspected (given how rare this is then it is not as odd as it might sound in the US), many officers have pepper spray and increasingly tasers, batons are standard. The lack of guns makes this all seem perfectly normal but I think that is more about a long standing attitude combined with legislation. As to a dappy - look up N-Dubz, I will make no comment about rap from the US causing increasing gun crime over here but it has been suggested by many. |
