I still believe that you reap what you sow when it comes to your education. My English degree helped me learn how to think: I gave it my all & I believe it has served me well. I have a career in an entirely different field, but I often refer back to what I learned as an undergrad. On a different note--I taught AP English at a posh, all-boy Catholic school for a year. Never. Again. Ever. |

Only for arts essays, and those don't really count, because most of them are loaded with BS and filler. |

I did this for a couple college classes >> one too crucial but still haha! I didn't steal from websites but I'd make up things that merely sounded good and we talked about in class instead of reading the material if it was too dry. Got worried when they talked about B.S.ers and being able to spot them a mile away, nailed it. I think I read 10 pages of a few hundred page book, it was great. |

This sounds like the essay of a student who did well in high school but will struggle in college. I hate it when students think we don't notice s/hit like this. Sparknotes? Really? Sparknotes and Wikipedia are the easiest places to spot plagiarism. |

It was Oedipus Rex and said he wasn't a tragic hero but a play tool for the Gods. Set up from birth to fail. I mean they built the city where a cow just happened to die. WTH!? You expect rationality for a culture based on that. Sorry omg. about to start ranting. |

I find this pretty simplistic and cynical (which is, y'know, the point) but I learned in school that if I followed the formula they taught (thesis statement; back it up with quotes, hences, and therefores; concluding statement) it did work. I intentionally made an accusatory statement about an author whose tome I only skim-read, backed it up, and got an A, even though the prof disagreed with me. |

The saddest part, I teach basic college English, and when a kid is struggling, I tell them to do this, and it always works. |

I tried this, wrote it the night before at 3am, got a 79 on it. of course, this was AP english, when they bumped me down to K-level (advanced), the teacher ate up the same essay and gave me an A+ and re-recommended me for AP.
it all comes down to who the teacher is |
