The Finnish actually have the best education in the world.

Does their syllabus cover irony and sarcasm?

@MacGuffin: Indeed she is! She has balls of steel! If it were me? I doubt I'd have that much patience. 8 minutes with a pistol in my face? Ugh!

And I have the patience of a saint! (Child Care worker, eh?)

VV True that @HolyGod: It's not a CHEAP solution.

But consider "gun registration".
In Canada it cost about 1 billion per year just to register long guns (NOT pistols, those have been registered since 1936). That's just the Federal Gov't, some claim the Provinces paid another billion per year as well.
Multiply that by 10, since y'all are very large.
That's 20 billion per year for a law which... DID NOTHING!
NOT one single crime prevented. NOT one single crime solved! NOTHING!
Thousands of Police spent thousands of hours on PAPERWORK! For a DECADE!

So: If they Gov't had simply GIVEN criminals all that money? THAT would have prevented more crimes than the registration did.

So: Spending some money to actually protect children in a way that has PROVEN effective?
Money well spent.

So I just added that all up. $954,573,889

Lot of wasted money. For sure. We don't know the context of any of that or what greater good it may have served, but let's just say it is a total waste of money.

There are 132,656 public schools in America. Let's say we hire an average of 2 officers per school and they make $40,000 a year. That would cost $10,612,480,000.

That is more than 10 times everything on your list combined. Hopefully that gives you some perspective.

I'm in a rush so please don't crucify me if my math is off somewhere. I don't have time to double check.

I think (but I'm not a cop) she followed her training: don't shoot unless you have to.
With no kids in sight, she did a great job of keeping him A) talking & B) in one spot, which was C) away from the children.

She's lucky she didn't D) Get shot in her lard arse.

@turdy: When two more police arrive (after the video ends) he got really agitated and the three of them shot him dead. She tried to end it peacefully though, that's what I'm pointing out.

@MacGuffin: I found out she's an "SRO" which is a "School Resource Officer" which is a full-fledged Police Person! Yeah she's a little chubby for a cop, but she's good at her job, I'd say.

OK: cards on the table, I'm not for guns being available to the public. In my mind, there would have been no incident if the perpetrator hadn't had such easy access to firearms in the first place (yes, I know, guns don't kill people, etc, yada yada). We could debate that all day (and I'm sure some people will).

However, the above issues aside, I think the 'security' guard in this instance (though how someone that out of shape could ever be considered a protector of anything but McDonald's profit margins beats me) should be sacked for not doing her job. She had someone with a gun and clearly threatening the kids she was paid to protect bang in her sights, and instead of having the courage to take him out decisively she chose instead to stand there like a pillock. She's lucky she's not dead. Someone that afraid to do their job shouldn't be entrusted with that level of responsibility ever again.

Taking a life is not to be taken lightly, but this is a school. Officer should have put one in his brain. In the end, her way saved a life, but if he had shot the officer there would have been no one left to stop him. Just my 2 cents.

HolyGod, not everything has to be preachy and have some deep seated political message. This is an interesting video to watch, and it is a perspective people don't usually see. That is all.

Also, don't suddenly pretend to be a deficit hawk. Ask yourself, can we raise taxes enough to close the already existing deficit? No.

@HolyGod: The USA spends more on education than almost any otheer nation. More than they evr have in the past too. By any measure: overall, per student, adjusted for inflation, more is spent now than ever.

fyi: You argued previously that school "gun free zones" still have armed security? Not at Virginia Tec, the guards there did not have guns. I think when advocates call for a gun-free zone they mean ALL guns, including staff.
>>idk about SROs though, since they're police, not staff.

This video is of the Tennessee school shooting = avoided post. The article for that contained many factual errors, as this video shows.

The "security doors" supposed to keep bad people out? Also delayed the police by 2-3 minutes, see & hear for yourself!

As @Nomud points out, the "action" starts after 3:00, also the 9/11 call.

THIS is what real-life looks like! Not TV Cops blasting busloads of badguys, not Movie Heros mowing down enemies with a machinegun, THIS is reality.
A chubby, pistol-packing police officer trying to "talk down" an armed, deranged person.

Would he have harmed anyone? No one knows. But the danger was there (obviously) and I for one think this Police person did a terrific job!

No actual violence in the video. SFW

What is the point of this post? I don't get it. Is it trying to prove some point? A police officer on campus is a great idea for a myriad of reasons. Who says it isn't?

Can we raise taxes enough to hire one for every school? Can we also raise taxes enough to supply our schools with books and pencils and hire enough teachers and fund music and art programs?
