Another example which men might recognise. L'Oreal- their whole company is propped up by the phrase 'you're worth it' , worth what FFS- soap? Oh- no- they mean worth being a glamour puss by buying mediocre cosmetics. That's okay as far as it goes...but it casually embraces the idea that personal worth is tied up to how shiny your hair is. Honestly- as men - do you give a crap? Your woman is clean, pretty and rather nice whether she is covered in goop or not.. you quite fancy a shag whatever. How many of you men have looked at women and wondered whether aliens ate their brain because of this rubbish attitude? It is a sneaky way of getting people to think a certain way- in this instance it is deliberate... but the effect is the same.

By the way, when I was 15 I had a vocabulary that most 50 year olds have. I am now ten years older, and I've read a lot more. So you can imagine I may have an arsenal that is packed with grandiloquence. But I don't use bombastic speech to win an argument. I use language as a set of instructions. I hope you can follow them.

Damn. I didn't mean to put that n dash in there. Semicolon*

But seriously, you really can't do that. You don't even know what a run-on sentence even looks like. But, you did explain a scientific theory properly for me.

Hey buddy...you can't use a coordinating conjunction after a semi-colon. Please go back to Eng 101.

You're right about that much. I made a mistake. I can't believe I said that backwards.

What I was trying to say was, "scientific theories are the most reliable, rigorous, and comprehensive form of scientific knowledge."

That's from wikipedia but it's a pretty succinct descriptive of their explanatory power.

Pretentious little twits like to prance about like their pedantic nonsense will ever affect me.

Your ability to use a Thesaurus is quite impressive. However, your inability to carry and improve upon an intelligent debate demonstrates your lack of intelligence.

That's wonderful, but I connected all my ideas with coordinating conjunctions.

You believe this to be true; yet, you consider yourself proficient with the English language? A very interesting contradiction.

Some of us can dig big holes with shovels, do plumbing, throw a punch and fart like hippos.... just think about the subtle, insidious ways that society encourages young people to inform their thinking... then change it.

"*** some text eaten*** need to stop and think about it. Do not allow bad behaviour to go unchallenged, women are not fragile little flowers, we are thinking autonomous beings who deserve to be treated with respect and decency. Sure- why not rib the girl- perhaps a marker pen moustache and pile of cans on her head while in recovery and under a blanket- that might actually be amusing and it would teach her to watch her drinking. Thats what happens to most boys when they pass out.. they don't get someones fingers up their arse on camera....."

Holy common sense batman!

I'm so sorry that no one else thinks like you. Well, beside myself. Women are people guys. Remember that. You're lucky to even get to drat them. Because they are people just like men! 'Cept they get the parts you may want to play with, and if you're NICE enough you can definitely get to play.

Theories explain facts. Are you sure you know what you are even talking about? Please leave now.

Actually, quite the opposite is true. Theories are supported by facts but do not have adequate proof yet to be consider facts. On the other hand, a fact has already been proven and does not need the support of a theory or theories.

Consider the Theory of Evolution. We support this theory by using the factual evidence we've gathered from the past. We would not suggest that Humans and Apes have a common ancestor BECAUSE of the Theory of Evolution. Instead, we state the Humans and Apes share a common ancestor and this supports the Theory of Evolution.

I am sure that it was an honest mistake.

Is a run on sentence three lines long, or two? I forget.

From Merriam-Webster:

Run-on sentence - a sentence containing two or more clauses not connected by the correct conjunction or punctuation.

I am all too happy to help, my friend.

Use language properly or stop using it all together because you're a testament to stupidity when someone with a powerful command of the language reads it and sees that you either do know what you mean and meant it and it looks stupid, or you're grossly negligent and belie your intentions with bad diction.

"Actually, you cleary are the definition of....

BTW, 'Ignorant' is not the same as 'ignoramus'.

'Ignorant' means you do not know something about the subject at hand. (such as, I am ignorant on how to perform brain surgery). While 'ignoramus' means ignorant about everything, which I have not stated. "

You're a typical contrarion; that's what you are. I have you pegged--but you're going to realize that calling me ignorant on nearly every conjecture I have made has elucidated that you believe I am an ignoramus. Nothing I have said has remotely be seen as interesting or worthy of value. You've demeaned everything I've said with a handwave of "ignorance".

Shocked is usually a term of disgust.

As is the word appalled, which was also used.

I've rarely heard that a rape was amazing--but I have heard it was shocking

He never stated that rape was amazing; rather, he stated that the lack of concern expressed by those in a position to affect the outcome was amazing. This is simple sentence structure.

It takes a group of people to stop one person's actions. You keep forgetting that

Speaking and expressing anger is a form of action. Often times, even the expression of a single individual can deter a group. You keep forgetting this.

I clearly dominated this entire post. I feel like a jackass for that. But, I think I've exposed the problem: apathy. Good day, rape apologists--*cough*--gentlemen.

SPrinkZ-"See...there are solutions!"

See, I was under the impression you were talking about RATIONAL and WORKABLE solutions, not 'not having cars' or 'altered reality'.

Why not work with the reality we have?

SPrinkZ-"Theories are actually the highest level of knowledge that we have ever attained."

Add 'scientific principle' to your area of ignorance. Theories are a way to determine FACTS, which is the highest level of knowledge. Many theories are wrong, while others may be unsolvable.

If amazed and shocked were the same word I'd say sure. We certainly don't sing shocking grace. We sing amazing grace.

Big difference. Use language properly or stop using it all together because you're a testament to stupidity when someone with a powerful command of the language reads it and sees that you either do know what you mean and meant it and it looks stupid, or you're grossly negligent and belie your intentions with bad diction.

McGrendel- yes of course people will be rude and offensive. but when everybody does it all the time without even thinking it is wrong we have a problem.no one thinks for a second that the world is sparkles and rainbows. But we are educated people in 1st world countries and we need to strive at all times for social equality and justice. That means acknowledging and eliminating institutional injustice. That requires us to notice when casual references to wrongs enforce them. I grew up in the 70's- it was NORMAL for men to pat womens bottoms- any woman from 15 to 35 ( after that you were old) - and to object met with howls of disdain and accusations of being a frigid lesbo... would you do that now and think it okay??? I bloody hope not. The reason that kind of casual sexist assault ended is because we realised what was wrong with it and stopped it. The reason no one said anything Patch is that we still normalise certain behaviour- every day, in our language, our behaviour and we ALL nee

You're missing the point. Stop acting like you even know what you're talking about. A platitude is a saying that has lost its meaning through repetition or being trite. Being shocked is qualitatively different from amazement. Amazement is rather positive. Shocked is usually a term of disgust.

I've rarely heard that a rape was amazing--but I have heard it was shocking. If you don't know the difference between the two then what words would you even conjure up to spare this poor girl the embarrassment of being pissed on and fingered in front of all her classmates? I wonder...or you could beat the hell out of them, or physically remove the girl from the situation...stuff like that.

Someone could have said "Hey that's wrong." And no one would have stopped. It takes a group of people to stop one person's actions. You keep forgetting that.

@SprinkZ

You're a fascinating individual. You're amazed no one said anything. You're not shocked...you're just amazed--you're amazed that no one said anything, but not that no one did nothing

It is very reasonable to assume that @patchgrabber's amazement extends from saying nothing to doing nothing as well. Additionally, he clearly states that this demostrated lack of concern is appalling to him. Therefore, to attempt to differentiate his statements in terms of 'amazed' and 'shock' seems rather petty and pointless.
