Humanaction:

It doesn't matter who is weighing our discussion. A popular thought was once the earth was flat. This discussion is between me and you. If you're going to be an intellectual coward and not take off the proverbial gloves and deal with me in a direct manner then don't waste my time by praying someone shares your prejudice to gain some argumentum ad populum momentum. Give me a break.

Getting smashed by a car was amazing. Getting hit by a train was amazing. etc. Getting dumped on prom night was amazing or whatever. It's not amazing. It sucks ***.

So now you presume to put words in my mouth? To refresh your memory, the word was "amazed" not "amazing." You also seem to think I should admit wrong when there was no wrong to be proven. Just because you don't like the word I used means little, because it was an appropriate word to convey the astonishment I felt. Also, if you don't want to be accused of playing Xbox, you might want to refrain from video game references.

The dictionary definition isn't even the real definition of the word

Ah, you are a truly remarkable individual to know so much more than those whose job it is to know such things. Perhaps you should write Webster and inform them of their improper definitions.

You're out-classed entirely in every dimension except a pittance of academia. You're not even worth a discussion anymore. You just want to prove me wrong and prove yourself right. You have no interest in a meaningful discussion anymore than I have an interest in making rape meaningful, or war meaningful, or any of that stuff meaningful. It's a disgrace that we kill one another. It's a disgrace that we rape one another.

It's nothing short of amazing that we still have language in our culture that supports it. Gaming culture SUCKS for this reason.

I hate hearing how so and so raped this one at a game. What? Raped? I've started saying sexual assault instead of rape to bring it to their attention how stupid it sounds. People tend to ask questions at least. It's a start.

You wanna IM me? You're just derailing this topic further. If you want to have a real pissing match at my speed then please IM me.

I would rather keep our discussion on a public forum; in this way, everyone can weigh our arguments.

Also, I would like to note that speed without accuracy is nothing more than a monkey pounding a keyboard. While it is certainly amusing, it is useless for the discussion.

"While WWII was certainly appalling, that Germany was able to fight a multiple front war against the Allies was nothing short of amazing.

Too easy."

They failed.

That was too easy. That still doesn't make sense. It's disassociated from war entirely. That sentence makes sense--but if you think about the literal sense of what they did then it doesn't make sense. It's amazing to be able to send dogs into trenches and kill soldiers. It's amazing to be able to send men to their deaths? It's amazing to make men take meth so they can continue dredging on along in the snow until they are defeated in Russia?

I suppose one could say it's nothing short of amazing how they were able to eliminate so many people indiscriminately as well.

You're disconnected dude. Get off the computer and get some air. Try it with me, baby.

I am not a weight-lifting champion by any means. But, I've been playing sports since I was 10. Weight-lifting especially useful if you are trying to really get huge. I am always concerned with power and stamina. But you're probably 140 pounds soaking wet about to take a ****.

I don't say I don't use FB or Xbox as if I am better than other people, but I just don't pick that poison. Talk about an assumption.

Try saying that something that you disliked/hated was amazing. It sounds stupid.

I spend my time doing other things. I do not care for that social heroin.

How grandiose and enlightened you must be! To think, we mere mortals thought to defy you.

You're just a poor nerd that weighs 140 pounds anyway. Please go work out and get some sun before you continue your tirade on how one might use a coordinating conjunction or a semicolon

Oh please, good sir, enlighten me regarding your weight-lifting; I will be most amused by this.

I wasn't being pedantic. Pedantic is being ostentatious one's knowledge (see what I did there? :D). I wasn't showing anything off. I was trying to say it's not even the right class of word to describe this. The dictionary definition isn't even the real definition of the word; it's always changing from day to day. And amazing is frankly a nice word to say about something. Shocked isn't--in every circumstance. Try saying that something that you disliked/hated was amazing. It sounds stupid.

You've attributed nothing aside from a brief lesson in the intricacies of the English language which most people will gloss over.

I am a bit confused over this statement. Did you mean to use the word contributed rather than attributed?

Your usage of the word just sucked. Get over it. If people could accept when they are wrong rather than just steamrolling ahead with their bull**** then maybe things would be better off. Whenever I get proven wrong I concede. No hard feelings. I am human. If I was God, I'd smite them from the contradiction, or curse and scream at them. But since I'm not God, and I am highly fallible like the rest of my species then I have to yield when I am wrong--put my ego aside so to speak.

Pedantic for the win yet again.

...says the guy getting his panties in a twist over my usage of the word "amazed" instead of "shocked."
*audible sigh*

I don't play xbox, or have a facebook. So please stop referencing them like they are remotely relevant to me. I spend my time doing other things. I do not care for that social heroin.

You're just a poor nerd that weighs 140 pounds anyway. Please go work out and get some sun before you continue your tirade on how one might use a coordinating conjunction or a semicolon. I think what is relevant is how we talk in the first place, and how things get interpreted--not how the system is supposed to be. Because what it really is is what we should be working with. Most people do not care for semicolons, or other odd punctuation like n/m dashes. Given that we all know the difference between words, and what they mean I think that is what was relevant in the first place.

I just found it annoying that someone can find something like this 'amazing' in any dimension. It's just disgusting. Anything else is not emotionally charged enough for something this degrading.

I am the boss of this entire thread right now. Like, I am Akuma from Streetfighter of I-A-B.

And how exactly will all the other 12-year olds on Xbox Live know that you've had intercourse with their mothers if you're wasting all your time on here spamming the thread? Also:
amazed(v)- Surprise (someone) greatly; fill with astonishment.

Therefore my usage of the word was apt, considering how the situation made me feel. Also, as @Humanaction pointed out, nice job ignoring my use of the word "appalled" as well. But I guess it's more important to brag about one's orthography than to make any meaningful arguments.

The L'Oreal thing wasn't actually meant to illustrate sexism per se, but the way a small weasel phrase can influence thinking on such a wide scale.....

Reasoning and logical thought are a system. It's not even intuitive at all. So, I guess you're right. I didn't study up on all my logic and reasoning yet at the university. *yawn*

You're just red herring everything you see. Prop up more strawmen and knock em down.

@SprinkZ

By the way, when I was 15 I had a vocabulary that most 50 year olds have.

Vocabularly and reading comprehension are not as closely linked to reasoning and logical thought as you might believe. I assure you, based on the evidence I've seen thus far, you are outclassed.

To argue against the L'Oreal thing...we do have 'just for men' commercials where men get their hair dyed, or rogaine commercials. I think all of those things are just bad advertising. But women get it the worst. They get indoctrinated into being pretty and all that nonsense from an extremely young age. I didn't worry about my mustache until I was 14. Most girls worry about their weight before they are 8. It's weird.

Hey buddy...you can't use a coordinating conjunction after a semi-colon. Please go back to Eng 101.

If the word "yet" had been used as a conjuction, then you would be correct; however, it was used to begin a new clause, similarly to "however" in this case. A word is not a conjuction because of its spelling; a word is a conjuction because of its usage.

"Some of us can dig big holes with shovels, do plumbing, throw a punch and fart like hippos.... just think about the subtle, insidious ways that society encourages young people to inform their thinking... then change it."

A woman pound for pound is stronger than a man if she trains properly or so I recall. Women can punch just as hard as a man if she's trained properly--already seen it on fight science. Women have better reflexes, and have better hand eye coordination.

The screwed up thing is this: if girls probably gave a damn about video games they'd be dominating the entire field. Most women aren't stupid. But men can be ridiculously stupid, or ridiculously smart. Women tend to be more in the middle. Not too dumb--not too smart. Most men get genetic diseases...not women.

If you look at things from a practical standpoint men are just here to catalyze an event for reproduction. Look at how dinky our chromosome even is.
