Common sense is one thing, but blaming the rapee for being assaulted...?
What about a man being raped? did he ask for it? and why didnt he? he wore tight jeans and a loose revealing shirt aswell.

I don't think that's what he was saying... it was more like there are criminals who don't give a poo about even trying to control themselves.
Do you think it's wrong of the police/local councils etc. to put up signs saying things like 'guard your purse, pickpockets operating in this area', or 'don't leave valuables on view in your car'?
do you think it's wrong to try and remind people that there are some people out there...not just men.. not just women... they're called criminals, who don't give a poo about your rights or bothering to try and control their urge to steal or rape.

Right- NcGrendel, you need to look at what you just said- a more moderate version of the argument for rape all over the world. Slut shaming- so define a slut- who did not dress or act 'safely'- well, we think of teeny skirts and heels. Other communities think cleavage and tight jeans- where does this stop- Hijab- and then women are told that they are assaulted because they leave their house. The point behind this is to say that men are incapable of controlling themselves. So- women must become invisible- because it puts the responsibility onto women- men have such animal instincts the sight of even hair provokes them. Is that a fair assessment of you, I hope not- but it is merely an extension of the idea that walking down the street in a skirt is like swimming in a tank of sharks. I believe that is wrong and unfair- on everyone, not just women. |

Was set to agree with this guy wholeheartedly since he said quite a bit that made sense. Then he went into that bit about creepyness and social awkwardness. How could someone temper those tendencies without being made aware of them by someone on the outside? |

This was amazing. Everything he said was valid. I have a two year old son and a daughter on the way, and I already fear the influence of negative images in society regarding women and how sexualized everything is to some extent. Parents have an enormous responsibility. The people who need to hear these points won't play it.
Also, a member of the Catholic Church did recently say that partial responsibility is on the child victims of priests for wanting it or some horrible reason. I can't remember, just google it. Sickening. |

well... this is an old debate ...playing football has nothing to do with committing a crime on their off hours.... the coach should be fired if he used his position to reprimand them over something outside his jurisdiction.... that said, put them kids in juvey or jail and be done with it. |

Or, be intelligent and do BOTH.
Tell you daughter how to avoid creepy people and to be aware of their surroundings. How not to accept drink they didn't see poured. How not to drink themselves into oblivion. How not to wear a 5-ct diamond necklace in downtown Detroit during the night. How not to go swimming with alligators. How to take care of themselves.
And we ALREADY tell rapist not to rape people. We have several thousand laws against it.
Guess what...people break the law. You have to be careful of people like that, and instruct your kids how to do the same.
Telling your daughter not to go swimming with sharks wearing a bloody-meat bathing suit is NOT 'blaming the victim', but instructing her about the dangers. A shark is going to be a shark. Avoid them. |

Thank You. It would be nice if we could please just stop blaming victims of rape. No matter what anyone wears, how drunk they get, they are NOT 'asking for it'. Stop telling people ( especially but not exclusively women) how to avoid being raped and start telling potential rapists to NOT rape people. I have a perfect right to walk down a dark alley in a short skirt- in safety. |
