They've disarmed the potential targets, practically abolished the self-defense defense. If you hurt a burglar in the commission of his crime, you will be in worse trouble than he will be. Of course crime is climbing.

"Please don't judge the rest of the Europe or the UK by our standards. Having one city full of violent, drunken psychopaths doesn't make everyone in the UK bad people. That's like suggesting we're all sheep shaggers just because of those Welsh perverts."

Did you people even read the whole damned article?
It's a non-story that points out a shift policy on recording statistics makes the place seem worse than it is on paper.

Read to comic at the end...

Bakcagain: You're missing the point. Criminals will find and or create whatever weapons they want.

You should take a look at the multitude and variety of weapons found in prisons sometime. if you can't keep weapons away from convicts behind bars, you'll never keep them out of their hands while they are out on the street.

Disarming the public just makes them fish in a barrel.

We are just a bunch of pagans

But to be fair our crime rate has soared with the liberal influx of immigrants.

@5cats
1) Slapping a stranger in the face would be classed as battery and thus violent crime here. Its already been explained why these figures aren't directly comparable - but you go on using them as a comfort blanket.
2) Rape in USA per 100,000 was 27 vs UK 29 - not much of a difference considered against the difficulty in reporting these crimes accurately.
3) even if these figures were right, in the UK you are more likely to get in a bit of fisticuffs and in the USA you are more likely to get shot dead... Erm.. that's fine by me, never been averse to a bit of pain, not so keen on being dead.

The daily mail.. ffs.. you guys have no idea how much of a joke that rag is.

Think how bad we would be if we clung to the belief that owning a gun would protect us. The ol' wild west would live again.

"5Cats has had it explained to him many times that Britain includes..."
@markust: Yeah yeah, Britian, England UK, whatevers! Crime is crime and the UK does NOT count a lot of things that would be counted in Canada, so it balances out. Slapping a stranger in the face? NOT a "crime" in the UK. How about "rape"? Twice as common in "UK" as in USA... that's a no-brainer: rape = violent crime.
Unless you're agreeing with those Repub morons about "rapey-rape"...

"In short it's just plain idiocy to institute weapons bans, all they do is disarm the law abiding public, which makes them defenseless targets for criminals and tyrannical government."

Agreed. Not being able to obtain a legal gun will not stop a freaking criminal. The market is flooded with US and post-soviet guns and they keep coming.

Also,

"I disagree with the subheading, given that a fair proportion of crime is carried out by immigrants."

Agreed as well. And this applies to most of Europe. Crime rates are driven up by minorities, especially of African and Mid-Eastern descent. See Turks in Germany, blacks in all of Scandinavia, gypsies in middle Europe (Czech and Slovak Republic, Hungary etc) Albanians all over the place especially the stolen Kosovo and so on and on.

@CrakrJak www.parliament.uk/ briefing-papers/sn04304.pdf If it doesn't work copy and past it
That link didn't work on my original message . But that's the report I was quoting. It's produced by parliament (not the government) is non partisan and non sensationlised. Dated from November 2012. That is more upto date. That is saying knives make up just 9% of violent crime.

The second report I linked to the one you are referring to was a report which looked how statistics were are made and sensationlised by the press.

The above link is saying you're wrong about the problem from the most upto date and least partisan source. The second link is why you shouldn't trust the newspaper on it's claims.

@MacGuffin , point is you've said something in anger and they fleed, no continuance of threats. That is not a violent crime.

Yeah they would be regarded as a Keck selling arrangement (asking for age verification) they're different. It's an easy health and safety ground argument to restrict selling at the counter of knives to young people. But it's different to require a different products to be created all together which was being suggested. That would be a Cassis case restriction. They're similiar laws but it would be a different outcome. A ban on pointed knives, which requires changing how knives are made so they don't have a tip but a curve or square edge will involve a lot more cost then requiring shops to check ID's before stuff is sold. The public safety grounds evidence needs to be stronger as the burden is stronger. Having read as many of these cases of selling arrangements, product harmonisation standards etc it would be struck down.

"Nah, it's more like saying if you exclude people from countries the USA has stolen land from in the past 150 years and blacks, your prison population would be approaching normal, rather than mass incarceration experiment that it is."

I'm saying that would be your excuse if you lived here, but you live in a very violent part of Europe, so you try and justify it by blaming others and saying if they weren't there your crime would be nonexistant. Excuses only please those who make them.

Backagain: Your report was dated 2007, The Independent report is dated this year. But even a knife ban wouldn't lead to the utopia that the UK seems to be seeking.

In short it's just plain idiocy to institute weapons bans, all they do is disarm the law abiding public, which makes them defenseless targets for criminals and tyrannical government.

But that would add an undue burden on all knife manufactures selling in the uk. Would also likely fall foul of Free movement of goods and services in the European Union, and though from your Euro Zone comment I know you are well aware of the complex governance of big old europe. It would likely be challenged in the courts.

It's a piece of piss, actually, to control the sale of knives, and manufacturers are already doing it. I recently had to purchase one of those packs of plastic picnic cutlery, including some incredibly blunt knives that could just about dent butter, and found myself being age-checked at the self service till. And in the past couple of years I did some work on an identity verification system that's used to check people's ages when buying stuff over the internet. Mainly it's used by gambling companies, but customers also included kitchen suppliers, since knives are age-controlled products here.

I find my wife cheating on me and threaten to chop the balls off the guy who's doing it. Guy runs away believing it tells police. That is violent crime.

Wow. Who'd have thought that was a violent crime? It's a crazy, crazy world. You can't even threaten to cut a guy's balls off any more, what's the world coming to?

as a sensible point, this is all recorded violent crime, and gives no idea just what constitutes violence. I was recently caught up in an attack on a friend- some guy went nuts and attacked her for no reason. She got punched in the face- and he did some serious damage. BUT- during the fracas her boyfriend tried to intervene and got thrown to the ground, I tried to intervene and got shoved out of the way- He is being done for 5 counts of assault- simply because it ups his sentence and gives them a bigger chance at getting him locked up. BUT this means that the figures will record this a 5 incidents- when in actuality it was only one.....

@Crakrjak on your knife ban call. I've found a lot from Doctors calling for the banning of pointed kitchen knives. And then some opportunist politicians commenting it. Arguing that they would stop the severity of knife attacks, i.e goes from stabbing to slashing.

But that would add an undue burden on all knife manufactures selling in the uk. Would also likely fall foul of Free movement of goods and services in the European Union, and though from your Euro Zone comment I know you are well aware of the complex governance of big old europe. It would likely be challenged in the courts. And though you can restrict the movement of goods (by imposing selling restrictions) for public health grounds they have to be legitimate and unfortunately the data would not hold up in court why there was a crisis that required this to be implemented.
