"...and that turned out just fine, right?"

If my memory serves me, the Central Powers were stopped from seizing control of Europe. In your world, the Allies would not have had the means to defend themselves, and would have been conquered.
Also you might want to note that in both ww1 and ww2, the Allies stopped the aggressors, but did not destroy them. This would not have been the case had the Allies not been properly armed, and therefore defeated.

VV Interesting discussion!
I compared the revolver to a semi-auto because that's the "wrong term" too, eh? But it's less wrong that the MSM's labeling of every gun as an "assault rifle", which is dead wrong!

Yes, it's about the reloading process.

@5cats..

Like any nerd, I'm fascinated with how things work, and indeed, there are some semi-auto revolvers, including this Mateba.

Isn't bump firing horribly inaccurate, as no doubt is something like the AA 12 (I think the Saiga 12 can be converted to behave in the same way). They sound scary as hell, but pro gun control as I am, I have to agree with the pro gunners here.. The person that uses it makes a difference, an AA-12 in anyones hand's is a dangerous thing, but not as bad as someone accurate and methodical with a handgun, or an AR15 as in the last shooting.

Knowledge is power,

Some would consider bump-firing a form of automatic fire

they havve even made bumpfire stocks to legally allow full auto on rifles, b/c technically the 's still semi

@MrPeabody: The purpose of the two great alliances in pre-WW1 Europe was to prevent war from breaking out--it was the nuke before we had nukes. Each army was so large, that if war broke out it would have been too devastating to handle. So the continent felt secure that the threat would prevent war from breaking out.

...and that turned out just fine, right?

I'm pretty sure the AA-12 isn't available for civilian use.

"as if the cosmetics of a firearm somehow make it more lethal.... the only thing that does this is the person using it"

People tend to forget that unless necessary the purpose of firearms is not to be lethal, but to deter others from being stupid, much like nuclear weapons.

Here is a case in point:
Russian man gives demonstration in the proper use of concealed weapon

The AA 12 is a fully automatic shotgun and I believe is the only one available.

The "automatic" refers to the mechanism to chamber a round.

A semi-automatic uses force from the fired round to cycle the action, eject the spent casing, and load a new round from a magazine, leaving the gun in a ready to fire condition with the pull of the trigger

An automatic does the same thing, but will also fire the hammer on the next round if the trigger is held until there are no rounds left.

A revolver is not a semi-auto because there is no magazine. Every round is held in its own chamber, which are rotated when the trigger is released.

A pump-action shotgun is not a semi-auto because you have to manually rack the pump to eject the spent casing and load a new onto into the chamber.

There are semi-auto shotguns, however, that will cycle themselves similar to semi-auto handguns.

Knowledge is power.

@MattPrince: Well yeah! The actual definition rests on wether a new bullet is "chambered" or not. In a revolver (or bolt action) it isn't done automaticly, it's done by the person.

But it's closer to call a revolver "semi-automatic" than it is to call a semi-automatic an "Assault Rifle" eh?

I did say "technically" (spelled rightly this time...).

@Nomund: No, @MattPierce is correct, it refers to the "automatic" re-loading, which a revolver doesn't do.

@Monkeyboy: It isn't the way a weapon "looks" it's how it functions. A really smart person told me that. (lolz! It's @Zuriel's comment lolz!) Ditto for knives, eh?

@MattPrince: I don't know that much about guns but I'm pretty sure all double-action revolvers count as semi-automatic according to your definition. And if I'm not mistaken, most revolvers today ARE double-action.

I am tired of gun "experts" mocking people who have not made an obsessive study of killing tools. I get that an AR15 is technically not an assault rifle, as it is not capable of selective fire. Big f*cking deal. I maintain that it has the same lethal potential, looks an awful lot like its military cousin, and should be kept out of the hands of unstable persons. If you choose to acquire a great deal of information about killing tools, that is your right. It does not give you the right to mock people whose interests lie elsewhere. An AR15 is, in fact, a civilian version of the M16 assault rifle. Pot-tay-to, Pot-ah-to.

@5 cats, no, that is not the definition of semi-automatic. Semi-automatic means that each pull fires a single round without manual intervention required *inbetween*. Therefore most revolvers are *not* semi-automatic.

You've just been corrected on a gun matter by an Englishman.

A. More guns.

@maxxim: Yes, the "1994 assault weapons ban" which expired after 2004, had those definitions that you mention.

It ALREADY IS almost impossible to buy a full-auto weapon! All "semi-" means is 1 pull on the trigger = one round fired. A revolver is "semi-automatic" technicly speaking...

So: no one can "...just go buy an assault rifle at WalMart" OK? When will journalists stop their "liberal crusades" and go back to reporting news?

You're an idiot if you think these crimes are being committed with automatic weapons. There is already a ban for those (except for ones that were here before the ban, which are few and extremely expensive.)

Well, I'm in Canada. What do I know about guns? LOL!
All I can say is, if a person has a gun that kills one person, instead of 20, there would be a lot less tragedies.

CrakrJak, let me just mention something about loading sequences in movies. They often do have scenes of them reloading their guns. Unfortunately these get easily cut out for time constraints.

I love how the pistol can be both a glock and an ak-47. That guide seems legit.

I should add this is the legal definition of assault weapons/rifles as per the US government, not the actual definition as per history/man who invented them/rest of the world.
