Cossack, it is both... depending on whether or not one is referring to pigment color or light color.

well, he wouldn't really be able to see black, either. i had a friend who would temporarily go blind on occasion. he claimed that the most accurate depiction of what it's like to be blind is this: close one eye. you can see out the other, but the closed eye doesn't necessarily register black so much as nothingness.

also, I read somewhere that it's like trying to see out your elbow.

Isn't white all the colours smooshed together and black an absence of colour? Silly blind person.

I'd describe colors to a blind person by the emotional impact most people get while seeing it.. But really it doesn't matter much in the long run unless they just want to know. Colors have an underlying emotional impact.. Say you're touching something made of ice-cold pointy metal. If it's pink.. Despite all its harshness.. It has a girly impact.

Draculya, not sure what you're talking about, I love British humor as well as American. Stick to your cliches and stereotypes, they will get you far in life.

Kaagan:
"well, you can describe black as what he is living in. what he is seeing."
-----------
Probably not. Because he has been blind since birth, the part of his brain that is responsible for sight, probably never truly kicked in. A person who was sighted and becomes blind, would "see" black. A person who never had the sense to begin with would not "see" anything. That's why he has such a hard time understanding colour.

Introduce him to someone with synesthesia and just listen for a while.

Wasn't my rhyme, Carmium. As Gerry said, there is no rhyme for silver.

Woomanfoo:
Please enlighten us with rhymes for silver. I know there are bugs called chiggers, I've worked with riggers and diggers, but silver?

I would describe colour as the difference between two things on top, or beside each other. Maybe have him touch a surface with different textures on it.

"Sporange" is the only word in the 20 volume Oxford Historical Dictionary that rhymes with Orange. Sporange is a very rare alternative form of sporangium (a botanical term for a part of a fern or similar plant).

Another word that has no rhyme... SILVER.
