Monday, December 10, 2012 6:13:09 AM It's only "unenforceable" until such time later that they decide to enforce it. People were once told that the police wouldn't be stopping people for not wearing their seat belts, back when that law was originally passed, now they do it all the time. And if the UN were the police force of the US that might mean something. Unless you're going that extra tin-hat mile and believe that the UN is going to somehow become this twisted world government that's sole objective is to overthrow the US and turn it into a communist regime. |

Sunday, December 09, 2012 2:39:13 PM If it's just a feel-good circle-j--k session, meh,I guess, it's what the UN does best. But if we have to shell out any more money or rights to the UN, they can go fly a kite in my opinion. |

Sunday, December 09, 2012 2:39:01 PM I could be for this UN measure, homeschooling aside, if it doesn't interfere with our sovereignty. But then what? Your just going to tell poor countries like Zimbabwe that can't afford mass wheel-chair ramps to get them? Will it try to combat Europe's forced sterilization and eugenics programs? My biggest problem is in the first Article "to promote, protect and ensure the full and equal enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms by all persons with disabilities, and to promote respect for their inherent dignity." Who is ensuring it? How do you ensure it and keep it sovereign? Who's promoting it? What are their views on inherent dignity and respect? The UN? That means France, China, and Russia get to decide, and we get to be the ones that pay for it. That I'm not for.

Saturday, December 08, 2012 11:08:25 PM jendrian: If it's based off our own ADA, then it's not necessary for us to ratify it. We do not need to be saddled with even more bureaucracy now or later down the road. |

Saturday, December 08, 2012 10:52:49 PM "@lauriloo I recommend you remain in America, then." I don't see why you would have a problem with what I said. I'm just illustrating how disabled people would benefit by higher accessibility in other countries. Is that a bad thing? "But back over here we don't need to concern ourself with how many wheel chair ramps are in Armenia." You obviously don't understand what this treaty is about. Other countries bought into the great things we did for disabled people and vowed to meet those standards for their people. Not forced to, WANT to. Standards that used to be important to republicans. Signing this treaty is like signing a petition, saying you agree with what it says. We used to like to think of the USA as being leaders. Now a tiny segment of our population is making us a joke with their paranoia and isolationism. We ARE world citizens whether you like it or not, and not just when money for us is involved. |

sutra46, sure americans travel and settle elsewhere. But they can't expect USA standards anywhere in the world but in the USA. They might find somethings better, others worse. But back over here we don't need to concern ourself with how many wheel chair ramps are in Armenia. |

Saturday, December 08, 2012 8:49:58 PM This treaty required no change of US law because it was based on US laws. During the vote Disabled Former Republican Senator Bob Dole came to show support for the treaty. Many republicans shook Bob's hand right after they voted against the Treaty. |

Saturday, December 08, 2012 8:21:19 PM If a country ratifies a treaty, they are making a promise to live up to it. It's an oath. If they don't live up to their promise, they dishonor their country. That actually means something to some people. In SOME countries. Does it mean something to us? The treaty sets a standard. If no one sets a standard, what progress will be made? We should be flattered that OUR law was used as the gold standard for other countries to aspire to. But, now we've embarrassed ourselves in front of the rest of the world. Again. |

Saturday, December 08, 2012 8:03:32 PM "A UN treat has no teeth, is unenforcable. So what's the point of it?" ...until it's ratified. Then it carries the same force as the constitution itself. Besides, if it has no legal force behind it, why is is so important to pass it? On the one hand, they say it's critically important, and on the other hand, they say it is completely powerless and inconsequential. So, which is it?

Saturday, December 08, 2012 8:03:23 PM Ever travel in Europe? I've taken two trips to Europe this year. I also have bad knees that make it hard for me to walk long distances, let alone with luggage. Stairs are EVERYWHERE in Europe. I was miserable unless I actually found a hotel, subway or train station that had an elevator or at least an escalator. Even if they had one, many weren't working. I honestly don't know how people in wheelchairs function in Europe and it's certainly miserable for a disabled American trying to travel or work there. The far right GOP is the tinfoil hat society and care about nothing that doesn't affect them personally. They have zero empathy for other people. They USED to, just not now. |

Saturday, December 08, 2012 5:31:02 PM @CrakrJak: you must've missed the part where 3 people say: "there is nothing, absolutely nothing in this treaty that says the UN can legally dictate what the US does with their disabilities legislation" |

Saturday, December 08, 2012 5:28:40 PM @Gerry1of1: that's because your government's foreign policy won't let the rest of the world do what they want. Want complete sovereignty, you can't meddle with other sovereign nation's affairs without them asking that your government behaves like a civilized state. Ergo, treaties. |

Saturday, December 08, 2012 5:23:26 PM "A UN treaty has no teeth, is unenforceable" (spelling corrected) It's only "unenforceable" until such time later that they decide to enforce it. People were once told that the police wouldn't be stopping people for not wearing their seat belts, back when that law was originally passed, now they do it all the time. Our ADA is perfectly fine. We don't need some future UN government telling us later that we have to live by their rules, not ours. |

Saturday, December 08, 2012 5:14:55 PM "A UN treat has no teeth, is unenforcable. So what's the point of it?" It's about setting a standard for the world to follow, based on the standard we set for ourselves. That's all. |
