@Andrew: Still looking at a world through Andrew-centric goggles huh? Your own dictionary definition shows that it IS intelligible. Just because people don't understand another language doesn't mean it isn't being spoken intelligibly.
I don't speak Korean, this makes the lyrics unintelligible to me.

Impossible to understand: "dolphin sounds are unintelligible to humans".

It has meaning whether or not you understand it. You can read an old novel that has a lot of meaning that you miss because you're only looking at the surface of it. But that doesn't mean the meaning doesn't exist just because you can't see it. Also, nice to know that anyone who is learning another language is a ____phile. I'm sure you go around telling people who have English as a second language that they're an Englishophile or an Americaphile. Because we can't possibly want to learn about another language or culture without having some kind of obsession or fetish. |

Unintelligible means "Being such that understanding or comprehension is difficult or impossible; incomprehensible"
Something being in a language you don't understand doesn't make it unintelligible. You don't understand it not because it's unintelligible, but because you aren't knowledgeable in the language. Unintelligible is a term used when something would normally be intelligible but because of how the person says it, it's unintelligible. What you're saying is basically that if I use a bunch of scientific words that you don't understand, I'm being unintelligible. But that's not the case, it's simply that you don't know the words in the first place. I can't change how I say the words to make you understand. That doesn't make it unintelligible. |

Psy wasn't "a average Asian guy". He's a Korean rapper and has many top hits in Korea since he debuted in 2001 (his main downtime was due to spending 4 years in the military, twice the requirement). He wasn't some random guy making a random internet video but rather a respected entertainer in Korea who happened to be the first to gain much popularity in the west. |

For basically every single person in the West that isn't a Korean immigrant or a Koreaphile, it effectively has no meaning. It could be about anything! And unintelligible doesn't have a bad connotation any more than foreign would. So the now 900,000,000 people who have seen it, you think they understand it? Even with the "growing popularity" of Korean? Nope.

I don't speak Korean, this makes the lyrics unintelligible to me. They are related.
The dictionary gave me this definition for the base word intelligible:
Intelligible: capable of being understood; comprehensible; clear: an intelligible response.
So the dictionary thinks responses can be intelligible and, presumably, unintelligible. Languages can be too. If you don't UNDERSTAND them. |

Every so often there comes a one hit wonder. Does anyone think they will ever hear of Psy again? Gangnam is catchy even without understanding the words. I love the fact that the internet can make a average Asian guy a world superstar overnight. The fact the Bill-O and Abalow don't get it tells me they're jealous and blind. Words aren't unintelligible or lack meaning just because you don't understand them. Only a truly ignorant person would think such a thing. As someone who has studied Korean for quite a few years, there is a significant amount of people outside of Korea learning the language. It's growing in popularity, especially in other Asian countries, but also all over the world. Korean media is becoming increasingly popular which encourages people to learn the language. |

If I wanted to, I could dig up a ton of silly dance songs in Bill O'Reilley's era. Actually, "Gangnam Style" is social commentary, if ol' Bill's producers had actually done any research. Gangnam is a part of South Korea that's very much like Beverly Hills. Very affluent with very shallow, self-absorbed women. Psy is making fun of them by saying, sarcastically, he wants a woman JUST like the women in Gangnam.

The Pony actually was a fad dance in the 60s, and it was very much like the dance in this video. Also, Bill is old, square, and does not have any hangups about admitting he isn't "hip to the latest jive." He's perfectly comfortable in his own skin, and he doesn't try to act like a kid or pretend he likes the same things kids do.
To me that's better than being an old creeper who pathetically tries to make kids think he's one of them. |
