I've had only two dogs but both were large breeds. One was a german shepherd and the other was a mix between a St Bernard & Chow. I never heard about this anal gland thing until my sister got the dog she has now which is a pomeranian. First time I heard her mention that after she came back from the groomer I thought she was joking.
Here's what my St Bernard/Chow looked like, his name was Fat Boy. This is from a camping trip in the Rocky Mountains in '09.

happens primarily in little breeds. bigger breeds don't generally have the problem. my sister's boston terrier used to have the problem quite regularly. its a mess and the dog HATES to be expressed...

It's what happens to dogs, yes DOGS! If you don't do it for them once in a while.
Very occasionally it'll happen to cats too...
