Luckily for all involved they surrendered! It was another 6 months before the next A-Bomb was ready...
Actually, that isn't true. The first bomb, Fat Man, was made with uranium-235, a rare isotope which was extremely difficult to separate from the more common uranium-238. The bomb design was simple, and we were fairly certain it would work, so it was never tested before it was dropped on Hiroshima. Had that been our only design, it would have taken several months to enrich enough bomb-grade uranium to build another.
However, the second bomb, Little Boy, was a completely different design. It used plutonium-239 which could be produced in large quantities by bombarding common uranium-238 with slow neutrons. The design was much more complicated, though, so they tested it before they dropped one on Nagasaki.
Had the war continued, we could have produced about one plutonium bomb per week. Fortunately, though, we didn't have to.

It's one thing to use an Atom Bomb, it's quite another to have one used ON YOU (and your nation).
The Japanese were working on the Bomb too! Their design likely would have worked, but they didn't have NEARLY enough uranium. Never mind making "Weapons Grade" out of it!
One might have been a fluke, two was proof that the USA had The Bomb AND was willing to use it.
Luckily for all involved they surrendered! It was another 6 months before the next A-Bomb was ready... |

It took 2 nukes before japan surrendered?? Jeez..tough lil buggers aren't they. That could explain some of the weird poo coming out of their imaginations no?
In some Eastern philosophies there are only three significant numbers: zero, one, and more than one. We had to show them that there was more than one. Only then did they realize we could bomb them again and again. |

he saw the future of the human race changing for the worse, forever. And that there was nothing he could do about it... and he knew that he had changed it. that is a lot of guilt. he could see all the implications of it's use.
sure he d=saved millions in the short run, but in that same short run two entire cities were wiped out or the people were horribly burned.
that would be hard to live with for anyone. |

We did that. They didn't believe we had such a bomb.
So we bombed one city and they still wouldn't surrender.
So we had to bomb another.
They already knew the war was lost, just a matter of how much time and how many of their people's lives they were willing to sacrafice. |

In reference to the bombing of Japan, the atomic bombs were not even the most deadly bombing raids. Fire bombing Tokyo did way more damage and killed far more people. |

As it happens, I just returned from a trip to Los Alamos three weeks ago. Visited the Manhattan Project site and two related museums. It was total nirvana, so to speak, for a physics and history buff like myself. Go, Oppie! |

300,000+ dead Americans. Some British and Australians too.
2,000,000+ Japanese soldiers dead
3-5,000,000 civilians too.
And THAT is just taking all of the southernmost island, about 1/4 of Japan...
Japan was prepared for invasion, had learned the best way to defend, didn't care about soldiers surviving at all, had some <nasty> surprises in store for the Americans... |

I'm sure he would rather have seen 100,000 dead Americans and 1,000,000 dead Japanese had we not had the bomb and instead had to invade the Japanese mainland. That would have been MUCH better. |
