Zwarte (means black) Piet is black because like Santa, they go down chimneys to put presents in childrens shoes. ...Or that's what they say these days.
It's an antient tradition over here. |

Ah yes, Sinterklass! I remember the first year I lived in Holland turning on the TV to see this Santa-esque dude arriving by boat accompanied by dozens of blacked-up white Dutch guys. It was... disturbing. I don't smoke weed, but if I had been smoking that day, I'm pretty sure my brain would have melted. |

Sinterklaas en Zwarte Piet. It's a century old tradition over here. And yes, it's all blackface. I don't really know why no black people are hired for the part though? Too realistic perhaps? I mean, we wouldn't want to scare kids now, don't we?
