No, you have no idea what she was 'trying' to do. You 'think' she was only trying to drive away.
The only facts was she was clutching her bag, resisting arrest and diving into her car.
There are several reasons she would dive into her car:
1) Drive Away.
2) Grab a gun from under the seat.
3) Attempt to run over one of the cops.
4) Change the cartridge in her vent air freshener.
The cops have to take the worst case scenario. |

Chiming in a bit late, but I gotta remark to djwajda. The advancements in technology in the past decade have allowed people to record, sometimes secretly and sometimes with the police officer fully aware, the behavior of cops interacting with citizens and the plethora or horror stories, shocking videos, and appalling violent behavior that has become almost the norm, discrediting the concept of their job, to protect and serve. What we see more and more, is middle aged individual men looking for any excuse to beat the hell out of someone and get away with it. I am all with oldollie on this, that cop should spend about 5-10 years in prison and learn his lesson like any other American citizen would. And they say that no one is above the law. Thats' total bull s-hit. All you have to do is wear a badge and blind justice doesn't see a thing. |

-As I have stated earlier in this thread the actual tasering was extreme. It's horrible that she nearly died and I have always felt, even as a former law enforcement officer that tasers are far more dangerous than they claim. But as others have stated they are an alternative. Do some officers need more training in their use? Hell yes. But do not condemn all on the actions of a few as many have done and not just in this thread. That officer will be reviewed and more than likely will receive some sort of action due to the excessive nature of the incident as far as the taser is concerned.
For you and so many others to be able to sit there and say with 100% certainty in your mind that the cops were completely wrong is laughable at best. Just like I can't sit here and say they were 100% in the right because they weren't. But despite what happened to her don't go making it sound like this woman did absolutely nothing wrong and that these officers did absolutely everything wrong. |

-Vehicle parked oddly in the street in the middle of the night with break lights on. Right there is a red flag to at least stop and ensure the safety of the driver.
-They performed a field sobriety test. Have you ever performed one? I've done dozens and the process involves not only 'walking a line' and so forth but asking alot of questions. I cannot say for sure but my guess would be she was acting suspiciously. See, I'm not like you and can assume EVERY detail from what little footage is shown but I can make assumptions based on EXPERIENCE. Am I 100% accurate? Probably not but I'm probably pretty damn close.
-They asked to look in her purse and she refused. She clutched the bag and ran to her car. Hence at this point she is not only suspected to be under the influence of a foreign substance she is now a risk to her own safety as well as that of the officers involved.

djwajda, if I did to you what they did to her, it would be a felony armed criminal action. They had no legal authority or justification for taking her purse and rifling through it. They had not witnessed her committing a crime; they had no evidence that she committed a crime; they had no criminal complaint against her; nor did they have even a reasonable suspicion that a crime had been committed. Since they had no legal authority to assault her, that makes them guilty of a crime -- actually several crimes: felony armed criminal action, felony aggravated battery, assault with a deadly weapon, attempted strong-armed robbery, unlawful detention, as well as federal civil rights charges.
Of course, they will get off Scot free, which will pretty much guarantee that they will do it again, as will their fellow police officers when they see what their friends got away with.

Wow, that's what I'd call short attention span @SavageChef. If you watched the entire video and not just the part where she talks about her purse,as it appears some in this thread have, you'd notice that they immediately initiated CPR and got her breathing again.
I just love the 'stupid cop' or 'fat pig' jabs I've seen in this thread. Complain and whine about them til you need them..right? |

I like how they're telling her not to move while actively tasing her.
She shouldn't have run, but instead asked for them to obtain a search warrant. That would have been best.
I don't condone nor do I blame officers for tasing her.She could have been running for her gun, but 3 times is excessive.

Cops having tasters are a good thing. They are better than in the old days when cops would beat the crap out of you with nightsticks or just straight up shoot you.
The chance of getting killed or seriously injured by a taser shot is tiny compared to beatings, or fudgekin bullet wounds. |

I understand the reason for the officers' suspicion. They certainly had the right to investigate. The problem is that they're too indoctrinated into thinking of a taser as a non-lethal weapon and, therefore, use it too quickly. Clearly, "non-lethal" is not necessarily an apt description for tasers. People have also been killed and critically injured by "non-lethal" rubber bullets. It also seems rather inappropriate that she was given three jolts. They need to start thinking of these weapons as "weapons of reduced lethality" rather than non-lethal. |

She wasn't afraid for her personal safety, she was afraid they'd find the pot. Why was she parked the way she was instead of pulling off onto the shoulder? The CHP had every right investigating as she could have been injured or gotten plowed into if a car had come speeding along and not stopped in time.
I'll definitely be interested in looking up the outcome of this as there is obviously more footage from the cruiser that wasn't shown here. However the fact remains that while the actual tasering was horrible she was in the wrong for running.
I love snap judgements by people who most likely have never come close to a situation like this other than what they show on CSI. |

Because the cops had already committed at least one felony armed criminal action, and she was understandably afraid for her personal safety. However, while attempting to escape from two violent armed felons was certainly justifiable, it wasn't very smart. |

Cops investigate, find nothing. They then escalate hostilities till they can initiate violence. Woman who did nothing wrong- except stand up for her rights, is assaulted and however briefly, dies.Because a cop is afraid of a woman running AWAY from him- guess he's partnered with the scarecrow. I wonder if they handcuffed her to her hospital bed while she racked up those horrendous medical bills? You know, 'cause they were skeered! |

From what I've heard, in some states tasering is considered the same amount of force as simply laying your hand on someone. |

Cops here have been given new instructions as to when the taser is to be used, after five cops killed an agitated man at the international airport with them. No longer is it seen as the "easy way out of a confrontation" and use of tasers has plummeted. |

As for the use of tasers. Yes please. I doubt you will ever here someone that was tased say they wish the cop would have used his gun instead of a taser. |
