Actually, once you're out of Chicago, the rest of the trip goes through mostly civilized territory, although parts of St. Louis can be pretty dicey, especially at night. |

Many of the roads that used to make up Route 66 are no longer drivable or safe. If you decide to remain faithful to all the abandoned roads you'll end up at many dead ends, decommissioned bridges and have to backtrack many miles. |

I drove 66 and hitchhiked it too! Fantastic road trip. Highly recomended. I met many weird and wonderful Americans. I also dropped into many museums and took up as much 66 kitch as possible. I grew up on the Atlantic coast so it was really cool to stick my toes in the Pacific for the first time. The south and west states are my favourites, I keep going back for more when ever I have the extra cash and time. |

I like Route 66 because even Americans say "Root" instead of "Rowt"!
Also liked all those old and varied bridges; rather interesting once you get looking! |
