Yeah, the Shane Meadows film 'This is England' is one of my favourites, well worth a look. there's a couple of mini series set after the movie but they tend to get away from the skin culture.
Sad that a subculture that was rare in that it crossed racial barriers, eventually became associated with white supremacy. You can't mention skinhead in Australia without someone immediately thinking of Romper Stomper, (admittedly also an excellent film, but the amount of people who missed the point of it is incredible)

The skins were kids from lower working class families, they couldn't afford to be ridin any fancy scooters or Nortons or wearin any fancy mod clothing. Every kid in the lower east side already had a short haircut, boots and jeans so it was a no brainer. Back then you had to stick together with yer mates. |

The Mods rarely mixed with the skinheads
their beef was with the "greasers" - Guys who liked rock music and rode Triumph/ Norton etc motorbikes and wore Leathers n Jeans, which grated against the Mod smart look and "hip" music and Lambretta scooters, although the skinhead trend really came in to its own at the end of the mod era, |

It's still live and kicking, it's a great image and they're really nice guys. Talk to them about music and they'll have you there for hours. I grew up around the time the whole thing got popular and many of my mates were into it. We all hugn around listening to ska music and looked at photos of scooters. Dressed in Turn up jeans, ox blood 18 holers (Dr Marten boots) and Fred Perry polo shirts. |

I am married to an "old" skinhead . He was a Trojan skinhead which is the original or traditional skinhead . The music they liked was largely created by black musicians :-ska, rocksteady, reggae and soul music. The term "trojan skinhead" comes from the record label Trojan Records and because of their appreciation of music played by black people, they tend to be non-racist ( unlike the white power skinheads). My husband's gang included Jamaicans and ANYONE who was racist got a kicking. My husband always made sure he wore a little Trojan badge (a horses head)so that people would know that "skin" was never an issue. |

@El_Chinche - Yeah, you pretty much got it right. Here's a short letter to the editor of the NY Times that sums it up nicely. "Real" skinheads are not racist, but you can thank Hollywood and the media for portraying them all as racist ever since the Neo-Nazi's came along. There's also a group started here in NYC in 1987 when the whole NY Hardcore & Punk scene was at it's prime called Skinheads Against Racial Prejudice (SHARP) |

They're skinheads, but this was taken before skinhead culture was in any way associated with racism. The film This Is England depicts how the National Front co-opted skinhead culture, which is why it is now almost exclusively associated with white supremacist groups. Which is very ironic, because skinhead culture originated in Jamaica, and was brought to England by Jamaican immigrants. |

While the skinheads here in america did adopt their style and attitude from these guys, they were absolutely not the same, well not at first. These guys were part of a subculture, it was more about music than race, in the UK who adopted this particular look to reflect their working class roots and to set themselves apart from mods, another subculture in the UK. I'll let some other more knowledgeable IABer explain it better before I get something wrong. |
