Angillion, there were two questions in the referendum. The first said, "Do you want the current status?" A majority rejected that. The second question had three options to choose from, they chose statehood.

Barely noticeable.

Have I misread it, or did the poll only contain 3 options for change (i.e. no option for remaining with the current status)?

Also, was it an informed choice? Or was it more a case of being promised more money and power for free?

The odd number of stars opens up the possibility of a redesign! You can arrange those stars any way you like. A message in Morse code, perhaps :) Or a star, to wind up the alien conspiracy nutters :)

Noooo...we'll have to change all the flags now!

Seriously, though. If they want it, let them have it. They pay taxes.

Over 60% favored statehood.

But it still might not happen. They have to make decisions about how it will be integrated and what not. One big thing would be the language. Fortuno originally had a plan to make all of Puerto Rico's schools English as a plan for statehood.

It probably won't happen this time. The vote barely passed, and the party that supported it had their candidate voted out of office. Still, the only reason they aren't a state is that they haven't wanted it... That and we like big round numbers.
