The kalimba is, indeed, one of the coolest and simplest instruments around. I own two, one of which is a Hugh Tracey - which is specifically tuned to Western scales.

However, I think the "coolest instrument you've probably never heard of" is the hang [drum], which was developed very recently (2000) by a Swiss company. Here's an example:

Enjoy!

Gonna get me one of those and throw it straight on the pile in the corner with the electric guitar, the acoustic guitar, the drums, the violin, the piano, the flute, the trumpet and the stylophone.

I've listened to this a few times now... It was good the first time around, but it has grown on me even more since.

It's the kind of music that I love to here in Amsterdam coffee shops, that you can just chill out to.

I would imagine that the musically-oriented, proficient game-boy user could create some pretty good tunes with this thing.

That was beautiful! By the time you got that good your arms would probably have thumb muscles like cucumbers.

yeah, one that you can reliably tune is a catch, for sure.. and they're pretty simple to play.

Perfect instruments for texters.

That's actually pretty impressive. Wonder how much they cost. Wouldn't think they could be too much.

Every thumb piano I've tried has had wrong notes all over the place. I think they must get damaged in shipping a lot.

This is impressive, though!

I have one of these, never managed to master it. This guy makes it look too easy, he's very talented.
