As I suspected, the tampon ads are lying to us.

Just bring me chocolate and champagne, and I was all right, back in the day. No husbands were harmed, and life carried on. Okay, so I have some unfortunate pairs of shoes still living in my closet to this day, but, like, I'm going to sell them on ebay or craigslist, 'k?

Since I have an engineering background, I know better than to believe a "study" without knowing whether it was properly conducted in a scientific way.

Which of the dozens of studies are you referring to, and why only that one?

I have noticed there are times that last several days where I will be more touchy and more prone to read too much into something someone said. Since I've recognized this happening, I can tell myself "Stop being so paranoid, it's just that time of the cycle" and I control it.

1) That's far less extreme than what is often described as normal.

2) I notice the same thing in myself. Should I assume I have PMS somehow?

3) Have you kept accurate notes and noted a statistically significant correlation with your menstrual cycle?

4) If so, how can you be sure that correlation is causation in this case? There could be another cause, the most obvious one being that it happens because you expect it to happen.

I'm on the pill so my hormones stay pretty regulated but I have noticed there are times that last several days where I will be more touchy and more prone to read too much into something someone said. Since I've recognized this happening, I can tell myself "Stop being so paranoid, it's just that time of the cycle" and I control it.

Since I have an engineering background, I know better than to believe a "study" without knowing whether it was properly conducted in a scientific way. If you look in the comments, someone spelled out all the flaws in the study (low sample sizes, no control group, not randomized, etc.). I don't know why it's so hard to believe that fluctuations in hormones would cause changes in emotions. It's like saying 'roid rage doesn't actually exist. Or saying testosterone levels in men don't affect how aggressive they tend to be.

LillianDulci: It's not the only such study. Researchers have, unsurprisingly, used men as a control group when studying PMS. Apart from menstrual cramps and water retention, the results are usually the same for men as they are for women.

PMS exists, but it's not *normal*. Most women keep calm and carry on. The violent mental instability described as being normal when a catch-all excuse is needed, yet which simultaneously has no effect on any woman's competence, is obviously impossible since it contradicts both itself and evidence in the real world. It exists, but it's an uncommon pathological condition and far from normal.

@peakingo: I was married for many years (to a highly-PMS woman, with a "short cycle"!) and have had lots of girlfriends, thanks for asking!

patchgrabber, not sure I believe that study. My mom thought PMS mood swings were just a lie too, so she never mentioned them to me. I got my first period early so I hadn't been influenced by friends or anything (we hadn't even discussed periods in school yet), and I was pretty much psychotic when I got my first period. That hormonal imbalance made me go from screaming to crying pretty much the whole day, and I was an even tempered kid who never screamed at anyone (still don't). I've never had it that bad since that one day, and I mostly think I get moody because I'm in pain which makes me more irritable, but there's no reason I should have acted like that my first time if not for PMS.

So a week before, during and week after women are crazy. Seems like if you are crazy 3/4s of the time THAT is your natural state. It's the 5 days you are nice that is unusual.

Thank GAWD I'm gay and don't have to put up with that.

So..does this stereotype apply only to US chicks? I know chicks from all over the world (good for me!) and they do not behave like this at all. They are either fulltime bitches or fulltime sweethearts. Do explain!

A recent studyfound that PMS doesn't really exist, it's merely a social construct that has a placebo effect.
