Saturday, November 03, 2012 5:41:06 AM Sorry, can I just make sure we're on the same page? We're making fun of sign language? |

Thursday, November 01, 2012 8:42:35 AM Since this isn't apparently known on the IAB board, in proper ASL, use of space and facial expressions are CRUCIAL to correct communication. They take the place of vocal intonation and tempo that spoken communication uses to convey unspoken meaning. She is the first "official" interpreter I've ever seen who is actually using the language correctly. Most others that you see, with their wooden expressions and restricted movements would sound like someone talking in a monotone and a pace that doesn't convey whether they're excited or happy or angry or sad. It must be a nice break for natural ASL users to see someone communicating so clearly and naturally like this! |

Thursday, November 01, 2012 4:56:17 AM I saw this live also and thought i was watching an onion report. In the eyes of management, if it's funny its not professional. I wonder if she got a talking to. |

Wednesday, October 31, 2012 11:33:37 PM I mean, honestly, check the comments on youtube. Yes, it's the fraking internet and people are going to say whatever they want, but seems pretty clear to me the administration is fully aware putting a sign translator on camera is all part of the act and completely unnecessary. There has GOT to be more spanish-only speaking citizens in NY than there are deaf people. Where is the spanish translator standing next to Bloomberg? She's not there because she wouldn't be as interesting to watch. |

Wednesday, October 31, 2012 11:28:48 PM Firstly, this is a press conference Corpse. IF there is a deaf person in this room, which is fine deaf people can be reporters for all I care, the translator would right there next to that person so the translator can actually ask questions. Secondly, "live" news flashes still have a delay, and as ALL public televisions in use in the US military are tuned to Fox News with Closed Captions on as they're almost always in high volume area's, I've seen plenty of "live" captioning where there is a human who occasionally has to backspace backspace backspace, but he still gets it right. I'm not saying this woman shouldn't have a job, I don't mind watching her, but it seems more like a show for ME than it does an aid for the deaf. |

Wednesday, October 31, 2012 8:58:57 PM @ Scuzoid: In addition to what corpsecrank said, often live 'news flashes' such as this aren't closed captioned, or if they are, it's by a machine which is often so horribly wrong it's not even funny. |

Wednesday, October 31, 2012 7:38:35 PM "Did something happen to "Closed Captioned" where it doesn't work anymore? I admit, it's not like I've actually seen it on a TV in awhile as I don't really watch TV for anything but sports, but... why is this woman necessary?" Uh the people who were in the room during these talks? A bit short sighted of you to believe everyone who watched this did so on tv or over the net and that no one was actually there live... |
