harsh? maybe by today's standards. they used to cut off the hands of thieves. now that was harsh. at the end of the day, i can't really feel sympathy for the thief. not saying clerks were in the right (all okay except biting as far as i can see), but at the end of the day: JUST DON'T STEAL! easy as that if you dont want to find yourself in this situation |

I bet it was worth it for the store and the rest of humanity. The shoplifter has not been humiliated and will think twice before doing it again. Also, I bet the store will have less problems with shoplifters in the area.

Oh come on, of course he'll be back to stealing stuff as soon as he's back on the streets. you don't think it's either the first time he's been caught stealing or the first time he's even been in a scuffle do you?
it was a snickers, it's not like he's stealing food to feed his family - he just saw something he wanted, didn't want to pay for it, so took it.
one employee maybe went a little too far with the biting his back when he was already pretty much restrained, but just holding him and trying to stop him from running away isn't excessive use of force - no one was punching him in the face whilst he was held were they? It wasn't a beating. |

Ha! This is the video to the story I read about. One of the employees was fired (probably the back biter) and two others were assigned to "retraining". The police came and they did arrest the culprit because he had a previous warrant. |

A thief is a thief. If that was my store, I would have whipped his @ss for LESS than a candy bar, simply to make an example of him.
The tape is going to be completely useless in any lawsuit he filed. He makes it quite clear that he HAD stolen something when he "adjusted" his story from "I don't have nothin'" to "I don't have nothin' ELSE". |

With this footage, the criminal will be able to sue that store for 1000s without a problem.
This is why they tell most cashiers at retail places to NOT pursue or try to apprehend criminals, if you aren't trained and schooled in exactly what you can and cannot do, lawsuits will smash you 100 times more than any petty theft would. |
