Respect must be earned? Ive been brought up to always respect my elders and teachers.So you walk around expecting people to impress you so that you may respect them,wow this thinking sure does change the world,Respect should be given out of love for on another but i guess thats too hard so dont right?just be sarcastic with one another and disrespect them if they think differently than you, push them down too your emotionally barbaric behavior so you can be at the same level.Why cant we lift each other up no matter what we choose too believe in and try to understand instead of ridicule?

oswalt is correct. The only thing we have to do is Not Deliberately stop them from practicing their beliefs. We definitely have the right to tell these people their beliefs are "stupid" and "silly" |

davymid: I think you misinterpreted that verse and put some narrow restraints on it. If we love one another, lay our lives down for each other, help others, we're doing what God wants. Try to hone that verse you used with these. Loving one another is the most important thing God wants us to do. |

Forgive me, but I find that an absolutely abhorrent ideal. God is Love, as long as it's my God? All the Muslims, Jews, Hindus, Traditional Chinese Animists, Atheists, Zooastrarians, Shintoists, African tribal religions, whatever, are all going to suffer eternally in hell because they didn't subscribe to my particular brand of candy?

Ah yes Smiley, nice bit of Christian Evangelising there. God is Love, etc. But my favourite quote from the bible is the oft-touted John 14:6, "Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me."
Which means, if you're a Christian, you're going to receive eternal life and bliss and happiness and Heaven. If you're anything else, you're going to live eternally in hell, in torment, with demons inserting anal-prolapsing inducing implements into your ass. For f*cking ever. |

The reason people don't want their beliefs challenged is because they are afraid they can't stand up to scrutiny. Which is patently absurd, because the only way to be certain that your beliefs are actually true is to subject them to scrutiny.
People are afraid of having their world view changed, but having your world view changed is probably the best thing you can do, because it will nearly always become more accurate. |

Anyone has the right to believe they will solve the worlds energy problems with no more than a sugar beet, a rubber band, and 2 paint brushes. Does that mean others have some ethical obligation to respect that belief if someone truly believed it? Many would argue that it'd be unethical to allow someone to torture theirself by living with such an expectation. |

There are quite a few beliefs I will not respect. Slavers, murderers, torturers, peder*sts, r*apists, and a fair batch more. I am not familiar with who or what Patton Oswalt is but quite agree with "No you don't!" statement on respecting some beliefs. |
